Spanish

Desde que era bien pequeña
Antes de saber andar
Fui del mundo la rumbera
Para mí era tan normal

Y descubrí a una suprema del teatro
Despreciando a los demás del camerino
Pero la supuesta diva
Por el eco de una vida
Que no le pertenecía
Se embrujó

Una diva es sencilla
Como un simple mortal
Una diva no pisa
A nadie para brillar
Su voz le hace grande
¿Qué más da?
Si ella es libre cantando
Como un pez en el mar

Una diva es valiente
Poderosa

Resurge bailando
Con más fuerza que un huracán

Ya verán…
Diva, diva, diva, diva
Diva, diva, diva, diva
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Diva, diva, diva, diva
Diva, diva, diva, diva
Oh, oh, oh, oh
¡Somos divas tú y yo!
Si ella es libre cantando
Como un pez en el mar

Una diva es valiente
Poderosa
Su vida es un jardín lleno de espinas y rosas
Resurge bailando
Con más fuerza que un huracán

Ya verán
Esa divа ѕoy YO

English

Since I was very little
Before learning how to walk
I was the world’s only “rumbera”
For me it was so usual

And I found out a theatre supreme
Disdaining the others in the dressing room
But the so-called diva
Due to the echo of a lifetime
That didn’t belong to her
Became bewitched

A diva is simple
Like a mere mortal
A diva doesn’t step
On anyone else to shine
Her voice makes her great
Who cares?
Because she is free singing
Like a fish in water

A diva is so brave
So powerful
Her life’s like a garden full of thorns and roses
She rises while dancing
Stronger than a hurricane

She’s the early morning mother
An artist with no line-up
With or without a fortune
They are divas as well

Fame is not your greatness
Equality is my flag
And music is my only enthusiasm

A diva is simple
Like a mere mortal
A diva doesn’t step
On anyone else to shine
Her voice makes her great
Who cares?
Because she is free singing
Like a fish in water

A diva is so brave
So powerful
Her life’s like a garden full of thorns and roses
She rises while dancing
Stronger than a hurricane

You’ll see…

Diva, diva, diva, diva
Diva, diva, diva, diva
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Diva, diva, diva, diva
Diva, diva, diva, diva
Oh, oh, oh, oh
We’re divas
You and I
Because she is free singing
Like a fish in water

A diva is so brave
So powerful
Her life’s like a garden full of thorns and roses
She rises while dancing
Stronger than a hurricane

You’ll see…
That divа iѕ ME

Who is Melody?

Melodía Ruiz Gutiérrez, known professionally as Melody, is a singer, songwriter, actress, and model, born in 1990 in Dos Hermanas, Seville. Since her debut in 2001, she has established herself as one of Spain’s most versatile artists.

Melody comes from a deeply musical family. Her father, Lorenzo Ruiz Molina, was a singer and a member of Los Kiyos(described as “a kind of Spanish Jackson Five” by El Mundo in 2007), while her mother, Ana Gutiérrez Flores, hails from Puerto Serrano, Cádiz. Growing up surrounded by music and performance, Melody began choreographing routines for her father’s group at age six and took lessons in singing, guitar, piano, and acting. Her brother, Eleazar Ruiz, also followed an artistic path as a singer, dancer, and stylist.

A career filled with hits and milestones

Before her solo breakthrough, Melody contributed to the album “Hay que volver a empezar”, an initiative raising awareness about domestic violence, alongside stars like Rocío Jurado, Lolita, Alaska, and Sole Giménez.

Her international breakthrough came in 2001 with her debut album “De pata negra”, selling over one million copies and achieving double platinum in Spain. Its lead single, “El baile del gorila”, became a summer anthem, topping charts in Spain, Paraguay, the USA, Argentina, and France, catapulting her to international fame.

In 2002, she released her second album “Muévete”, produced by Gustavo Ramudo, followed by “T.Q.M.” in 2003, produced by Luis Gómez Escolar and Julio Seijas. These releases led to tours across Latin America, Japan, Australia, and the UK.

Soon after, Melody ventured into film soundtracks, performing “No diré que es amor” for the Hercules movie soundtrack, alongside Pastora Soler, Malú, and Marta Sánchez. Her track “Dabadabadá” was also featured in the telenovela Mujeres apasionadas. In 2004, she released her fourth studio album, “Melodía”.

Eurovision 2009: Her first Eurovision attempt

After a brief hiatus, Melody returned in 2008 with her fifth album “Los buenos días”, produced by Manuel Ruiz (Queco), the composer behind Las Ketchup’s Eurovision 2006 entry “Bloody Mary”. In December 2008, she teamed up with the dance group Los Vivancos to compete in Eurovisión 2009: El Retorno, presenting the song “Amante de la luna”.

She won both the jury and televote in the semifinal held on February 14, 2009. However, just four days later, Los Vivancos withdrew, citing unmet technical and artistic requirements. Melody continued solo, finding a new dance team for the final, where she tied in points with Soraya Arnelas. Ultimately, the televote tipped the win in Soraya’s favor, sparking some controversy.

From “Tu Cara Me Suena” to a new wave of success

In 2012, Melody released the single “Ten cuidaíto”, followed in 2013 by a merengue remix of “No sé” featuring DJ Pana. That same year, she participated in Tu cara más solidaria, a charity gala organized by Tu cara me suenasupporting Cruz Roja Española. Her appearance led to her joining season 3 of the show, where she won four galas and finished as runner-up.

In 2014, she released her sixth album “Mucho camino por andar”, collaborating with DJ Pana, drummer Waldo Madera, violinist Vasko Vassilev, rapper Gordo Máster, and other notable musicians.

In 2015, Melody returned to soundtracks with “In My Mind”, the main theme for the Spanish film Ahora o nunca, where she also made her acting debut. She released “Parapapá” in 2018 and “Rúmbame” in 2019, both surpassing 1 million streams on digital platforms.

In 2023, she scored one of her biggest recent hits with “Mujer Loba”, amassing 500,000 streams in just two weeks. That same year, she released a Live Session EP and collaborated with María Peláe (Benidorm Fest 2024 finalist) on “Putukita”, a powerful flamenco track celebrating their journeys.

María Peláe praised the collaboration:

“This song could only be with her. Thank you, Melody, for your dedication, professionalism, and artistry.”

Winning Benidorm Fest 2025 and heading to Basel

“Esa Diva”, written by Alberto Lorite and Melody, is produced by Eurovision hitmakers Joy Deb, Peter Boström, Thomas G:son, and Juan Sueiro. Melody’s victory at Benidorm Fest 2025 earned her the Bronze Microphone and the chance to represent Spain at the Eurovision Song Contest 2025.

Spain will compete directly in the Grand Final on May 17th, 2025, in Basel, Switzerland. The Benidorm Fest Grand Final drew an average of 1.94 million viewers (17.1% share), leading the Saturday night ratings and marking the festival’s second-best figures ever, with over 4.96 million viewers tuning in for at least one minute during its 132-minute broadcast.
