Eurovision Eurovision 2018 Spain

Spain: Amaia crowned as Operación Triunfo 2017 winner

The audience gave the final say on the overall winner

Operación Triunfo 2017 has unfortunately come to an end and last night, the TV show gave us the ultimate winner: Amaia Romero won the televote over the remaining four finalists during a show which had set the final decision to be made in two voting rounds. And as proved, it was way too tough.

All 5 singers: Alfred, Ana Guerra, Amaia, Aitana and Miriam performed the first set of songs for the audience which had spent their time rehearsing throughout the week. We must say that all of them woved both the juries and the televote and rocked the stage during the show as they impressed by letting everyone know why they deserved their spot in the grand final of the show.

After the first songs were performed, the lines were opened and all the viewers had a few minutes to make up their minds. After this happened, it was unexpectedly revealed that Ana Guerra and Alfred were leaving the race to get OT 2017 grand prize.

So that, the three eventual singers making it through to the superfinal went on to sing a set of three songs which were prepared in case they were going further. All three songs were performed by the respective artist at the beginning of the program, during the first gala. At this point, Amaia performed “Starman” (David Bowie); Aitana made a mesmerizing caption of “Bang Bang” (Jessie J; Ariana Grande; Nicki Minaj) and Miriam gave a last try to Vanesa Martin’s “No Te Pude Retener”. The results were decided via 100% televoting and the viewers awarded Amaia the first place, crowning her as the winner with 46% of the votes received; Amaia was proclaimed the runner-up (42%) and Miriam came in third place (12%).

Also during the transmission, three well-recognised and popular Spanish artists made an appearance on stage: Spain’s very own 1966 and 1967 Eurovision artist Raphael sang his hit “Mi Gran Noche” alongside the finalists at the opening; Pablo Alborán made a rendition of his self-penned track “Prometo” and even though technical sound issues could not be fixed at the last part of the show, David Bisbal (Operación Triunfo Series #1) went on to sing one of his songs “a cappella” in front of all 16 actual contestants.

After a successful comeback of the OT series, the producers decided to broadcast the shows at several cinema halls around the Spanish geography, which not only this proved that the show went beyond limits but viewing figures last night turned to be RTVE’s most successful TV show in years and lifted up the spirit of the OT format which seemed shaped down due tothe  lack of interest back in 2011 when the show was turned off. Over 4 million TV viewers tuned in to see how Amaia eventually got the actual title of “Amaia I de España”.

All 16 participants will now go on to attend some promo events and interviews as well as rehearsing the tour and set of gigs around Spain coming up this spring. More dates are still to be announced!

In the meantime, Spain is getting ready to see Alfred & Amaia shining bright on the Eurovision stage in May, hoping they deliver an amazing performance of their lovely and touching ballad “Tu Canción”, so will the couple get to achieve Eurovision glory and improve Spain’s set of disappointing results in the contest?
