Eurovision 2024: What are the EBU rules when it comes down to autotune?

Recently it became known that the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) was considering to condone autotune in the contest, a statement that divided fans of the contest and beyond. Now we know what the rules and regulations are when it comes down to the use of autotune.

What is autotune?

Autotune is the way vocals can be enhanced when an artist performs on-stage. In principle this forbidden during live performances in the Eurovision Song Contest.

Is autotune used in national finals?

Yes, in Melodi Grand Prix, the Norwegian national, the use of autotune is allowed, although it is forbidden in the actual Eurovision Song Contest.

The Norwegian national broadcaster channel TV2 has asked the EBU what their specific rules are on the matter, just to have a clear idea of it all.

What are the rules of the EBU regarding the use of autotune?

“Live vocals are very important in our format and in the competition’s tradition. The quality of the lead vocals is a large part of the overall assessment of the performance, both for the jury and the audience at home, says the EBU’s communications department to TV 2, emphasizing:

That performance must take place live, and without manipulation.

Autotune can be used as a sound effect on parts of a song, but we do not allow it to correct the tone of the lead singer or the lead choir throughout the song.”

What does the information mean when it comes down to Eurovision?

This means that autotune is allowed at Eurovision, but in a very limited way, it cannot enhance a voice, but when it is used as a special effect, like is used in, for example, Cher’s worldwide mega hit “Believe”.

Who decides on the rules of the Eurovision Song Contest?

The rules of the Eurovision Song Contest are decided on by the “Eurovision Song Contest Reference Group”, the executive Committee of all members of the EBU. Each January this reference group gathers to decide on the rules of the upcoming contest, among other topics. In case there are any changes in the rules of the upcoming contest this will be made public by the EBU.
