ESC+Plus has talked with Stefanía Svavarsdóttir, one of the lucky selected to compete at the Icelandic “Söngvakeppni Sjónvarpsins” 2015.
Check what she has told us below!
ESC+Plus: Hello Stefanía! First of all, congratulations on having been selected to compete at the Icelandic selection for Eurovision 2015!
Thank you so much.
E+: You have already taken part at Söngvakeppni Sjónvarpsins before, why did you decide entering the competition once more time?
It wasn’t the plan to compete again any time soon, but Sveinn Rúnar wrote this amazing song for me and decided to send it in and it got through. I couldn’t imagine anyone else singing it and I think it’s a great song so I decided to go for it again. However it goes, I know I’ll have a great time with great people because Eurovision can’t and won’t ever be boring.
E+: What it would mean for you to represent Iceland in Vienna?
It would be a dream come true, as cheesy as that sounds. I’ve watched every competition since I was 7 years old and always dreamed about standing on that stage.
E+: Can you tell us about your musical career and important achievements?
I started singing with a band from my school when I was 14 and at 16 I won a big singing competition which made me a lot more visible in Iceland and I got my breakthrough to the music industry. By the age of 17 I was singing with Stuðmenn, one of Iceland’s oldest and most popular band. Since then I have worked with many of Iceland’s most talented artists, doing all kinds of concerts and shows. Lately I’ve been working on some songs with Sveinn Rúnar that will soon be released.
E+: Your song is composed by the amazing Sveinn Rúnar Sigurðsson who was in charge of some past Eurovision entries and your entry for Eurovision 2013 (with Jógvan). Why did you decide cooperating with him one more time?
He wrote this song for me shortly after the competition with Jógvan in 2013. At first he sent me just a small clip of a melody and I instantly liked it and couldn’t get it out of my head for months. He’s a very talented composer and when you hear a melody that sticks for so long, you know it must be good.
E+: Your song is called “Ást eitt augnablik”. Can you tell us about it? What is the story behind the lyrics?
It’s about that moment when you meet a stranger, your eyes meet and it sparks something deep inside you. Strange yet so exciting. It happens in just a blink of an eye but leaves you wondering about that stranger and thinking “what if”?
E+: If you win “Söngvakeppni Sjónvarpsins 2015”, would sing in English or Icelandic at Eurovision? Would you make a new version of the song?
I think we would go for the English version but nothing has been decided yet. I really love the song as it is and we’ve already made changes to it and fixed the bits we weren’t 100 % satisfied with, so I’m very content with it the way it is and I don’t think we’ll change it any more.
E+: How are you preparing your “Söngvakeppni Sjónvarpsins” performance? Can you reveal us anything about it?
The outfit is being made and I love it! Now we’re mostly planning the performance and rehearsing, all the little things are coming together and I can’t wait to perform the song and do it live.
E+: What are your main strengths so as to get the support of juries and televote to reach Eurovision?
One of my strengths is that I’m a good live performer. I’m going to do my best, I can’t do any better than that and I hope it will get me far =).
E+: Do you usually watch Eurovision? What are your favourite song in the history of the competition?
I watch it every year. I absolutely love it! I have way too many favourite songs. One of my all time favourites is Loreen’s Euphoria. Other runner-ups are Diva – Israel 1998, Molitva – Serbia 2007, Wadde Hadde Dude Da – Germany 2000, Solo – Russia 2000, Let me try – Romania 2005, J’aime la vie – Belgium 1986 and I could go on and on and on
E+: Finally, would you like to send a message for our readers?
Happy Eurovision season!
