Interview Eurovision Eurovision 2015 Switzerland

Mélanie René: “I feel like everything I’ve ever dreamt is actually coming true!” (Switzerland 2015 – Exclusive Interview)

ESC+Plus has had the chance to talk with the Swiss representative for Eurovision 2015. Mélanie René will sing “Time to shine” in the second semi-final set on May 21.

E+: Hello Mélanie! Firstly congratulations on having been selected to represent Switzerland at Eurovision 2015!

Thank you very much!

E+: How did you feel during the national final? What was the first idea which came to your mind when you were announced the winner of the competition?

When the moderator Sven Epiney said my name I didn’t believe it. I realised it was me when my backing vocalists started screaming behind me. I felt (and still feel) so happy, so proud but also so humbled that the audience and judges picked my song to represent Switzerland in Austria! I still feel like I’m daydreaming!

E+: What do you think it was the key to win the contest?

We all worked hard and prepared ourselves, but at the end of the day it was the judges and the public who voted and made their choice. I feel really happy and proud to have been chosen to represent Switzerland in Vienna, and I don’t take this for granted!

E+: Would you like to keep the same idea of stage performance for Eurovision?

Maybe or maybe not. I can’t say more for now. With the people in the team working with me, we are re-thinking the whole concept, staging and performance. It is a very exciting time! I am also keeping up with my vocal lessons and rehearsals with the rest of the band.

E+: In our previous interview you told us you would sing in English in Vienna. Why in English and not in French, your native language?

Yes. English is an international language, and I would like everyone watching the show to understand what the song is about. However, it does not mean I will not be singing in French in the future.

E+: How has your life changed after winning the Swiss competition on January 31?

I sleep a bit less. And I am doing incredible things, like shooting videos, travelling abroad, doing interviews, meeting new people.. I feel like everything I have ever dreamt is actually coming true!

E+: Promotion before Eurovision is always important, have you though about visiting other countries to promote your song “Time”?

No, I am not there yet. Before Eurovision I was planning the release of my EP, which should hopefully be out this spring.

E+: Have you listened to the other Eurovision 2015 competing entries?

I have listened to a lot of them, and I can’t pick a favourite! They all have their own style, their own universe, and I personally believe that this is what makes this contest so interesting!

E+: Besides Eurovision, what are your plans for this year?

I am currently working on an EP that I hope to release by the end of Spring. I am also preparing a few gigs for later in the year.

E+: What is your favorite music style? Do you have any favourite singer?

I grew up listening to whatever my mum or dad were listening to: Sega (typical maurician music), chansons françaises, country, gospel, soul, funk, reggae and so many more genre! Thanks to them I now have quite an eclectic taste in music, ranging from different styles and languages.

E+: Finally would you like to send a message for our readers?

I would like to thank every single person who has supported and encouraged me since the very beginning, and who still believe in me. You are what keeps me motivated and passionate about what I do! You guys are simply amazing <3
