Interview Eurovision Eurovision 2015 Estonia

Kali Briis Band: “The composition of the song is as simple as the lyrics and the message” (Estonian finalists – Interview)

ESC+Plus has talked to the leader of Kali Briis Band, finalists of the Estonian selection for Eurovision 2015 “Eesti Laul”. The band will sing “Idiot” in the last show set on February 21.

ESC+Plus: Hello guys! First of all congratulations on having qualified for the final of “Eesti Laul 2015”. How did you experience the semi-final show and the moment when you got the ticket to the final?

Thank you, we were all really moved by the fact that people voted for us and we’re still quite shocked, because we have given the chance to take our music to the next level – more listeners and a bigger stage.

E+: Can you tell us about you, your musical evolution and important achievements?

I’ve made music since I was 12 and I started with hip hop, through hip hop I discovered funk and soul. At the same time I also grew interest for electro music. So today my music is a mix of soul, funk, pop and electro. My biggest achievement would be winning the best alternative album award at Estonian music awards, but equally important is that I finally found an ultra band who I can perform my music with.

E+: Why did you decide to take part in “Eesti Laul 2015”?

Because it’s the most important musical event in Estonia.

E+: What it would mean for you to represent Estonia in Vienna?

It would be indescribable, but the fact that we got to the finals is already a dream come true.

E+: Your song is called “Idiot”, can you tell us about your song and the story behind the lyrics? How was the composition procedure?

It tells a simple story – idiots aren’t the people who don’t know anything, but the people who think they know everything. The composition of the song is as simple as the lyrics and the message, because it’s the only way to spread the message to a greater audience – so yes, for me especially it’s important to make people think about how they behave with others.

E+: Would you change anything of your stage performance for the final?

I myself will try to be less nervous and more sincere on the stage.

E+: What are your main strengths as to get the people and juries’ support to win the contest?

Our sincerity and indie look and sound.

E+: What can this competition contribute to your musical career?

I hope it will bring us more performances.

E+: Do you have any favourite song among the other Eesti Laul candidates?

Stig and Elina Born.

E+: Do you usually watch Eurovision? Do you have any favourite song in the history of the contest?

I’ve watched Eurovision for as long as I can remember. My favourite song through all the time would be Brainstorm – My Star.

E+: Besides Eurovision, what are your plans for this year?

To record the first album with the whole band.

E+: What is your favourite music style? Do you have any favourite singer?

My favourite style of music would be pop in general, in other words, everything that works. My favourite singer would be Peter Gabriel.

E+: Finally, would you like to send a message for our readers?

Don’t try to be a better person, try to be a better person with others.
