Interview Eurovision Eurovision 2016 Latvia

Dvines: “Set it on Fire talks about getting rid of all the anxiety, insecurity and doubts” (Latvian candidates – Exclusive Interview)

ESC+Plus has talked to Dvines, participants of this year’s Latvian national selection for Eurovision. The twin sisters Anastasia and Katherine will perform “Set It On Fire” in the second Supernova heat to take place tomorrow.

ESC+Plus: Hello! First of all, thank you so much for your time and congratulations on having been selected to take part in the Latvian national selection for Eurovision 2016!

Can you tell us about you, your musical career and important achievements?

Well, we are twin sisters, and we’ve been a duo since the day we were born 🙂 We’ve been in music business since 2008, but only on the Latvian scale. We have taken part in several Latvian singing TV-shows, and also released various singles in english. We suppose, we are better known for our collaborations with various dance music producers mostly for the club scene. We’ve been gone for 3 years, not doing anything major, really searching for our unique sound. And this year we are back and ready, we have found the right direction in music and this year we’re releasing our first serious EP, produced by Latvian dance music producer – Makree.

E+: What impelled you to take part in “Supernova 2016”?

Our EP is “cooking”, several songs were ready by the time the auditions were announced, so we decided to give it a try, since last year Supernova had such a success, and in our opinion was very well produced and done.

E+: How did you feel when you knew you had qualified for the live shows? Did you expect it?

We really had faith in our song, but we also can’t say we weren’t surprised. It is always pleasant to hear that something you do has been appreciated by somebody else.

E+: What it would mean for you to represent Latvia?

It would mean honour and huge responsibility. Representing your country is also something very sacred and meaningful to every patriot, who we definitely consider ourselves being.

E+: Can you tell us about your song? What is the story behind the lyrics?

The song is one of the puzzle pieces of our personal story from our EP. We have been gone from the music stage for a while, having a tough time understanding who we are and what our path is. So writing an album was like a therapy for us. “Set it on Fire” tells about getting rid of all the anxiety, insecurity and doubts, it invites to set all the fears on fire, forget the mistakes of the past and start a new life. We are the writers of the song, so it comes from a very personal experience, but we believe, that anyone can relate to this message.

E+: Why do you think your song has to be selected for Stockholm? What are you strengths to reach the top in the competition?

It is modern and fresh. We think, that it might be something very unusual for the Eurovision format, underground-ish maybe? 😀 But maybe it’s just how we see it. Again, it is very personal, so we believe that people might feel it and relate to our story.

E+: Have you started to prepare your stage performance for “Supernova 2016”?

Of course, the preparations are fully on. We can’t tell you the details, but we will have a couple of surprises on stage, and we will also try to keep it simple, clean and fresh.

E+: Do you usually watch Eurovision? What are your favorite songs in the history of the competition?

Our favorite Eurovision acts must be – “Molitva” from Serbia, who won the competition a while ago, and Loreen.

E+: If you could choose a Eurovision former participant to sing along with, who would it be?

Celine Dion – definitely, and Jedward would be real fun (twin-power).

E+: Besides Eurovision, what are your plans for this year?

EP is on the way, new music videos, singles and a lot of work ahead.

E+: Finally, can you send a message for our readers and Eurovision fans?

Hey, guys! Let this Eurovision marathon be a fun blast to live along! We will do our best and enjoy every second of it! Thank you for following Supernova. See you all on the 14th of February, with our performance number 7.

E+: Thank you for your time and good luck!
