Unfortunately contestant Frida Gold has to withdraw from the German national final, “Unser Lied für Liverpool”, due to illness. Yesterday Frida Gold already missed the second round of rehearsals, and because of that also the jury show; now it was made public that the band has to withdraw.
The band has released a statement on the very unfortunate matter, which is the following:
“On the second day of rehearsals it was already clear to everyone involved that Alina Süggeler was very ill and suffering from a fever. It had to be reduced to two runs, during which she could only sing sporadically. Medication would be able to stabilise her for the following day. Unfortunately, the opposite happened. In addition to fever, chills and a sore throat, she had also completely lost her voice. The immediate visit to the doctor meant that he had to write her off sick for a week and prescribe her bed rest.

Any short-term medical measures had not led to any acute improvement to enable a performance. After weeks of work and preparation, this is a shock and an immense disappointment for Alina and everyone involved.
It was Frida Gold’s idea and desire to present the message of the song ‘Alle Frauen in mir sind müde’ in front of a large audience, because it is important to them.
The possibility of possibly singing it in Liverpool as the German Eurovision entry was also a great motivation. Frida Gold would like to thank everyone involved, NDR and of course also their fans.”
What is going to happen?

8 acts instead of 9
The thing that is going to happen now is that there will be 8 acts in the German national final tonight. The votes that were already cast for Frida Gold will be cancelled entirely. The voting code of Frida Gold, which was “08”, will be cancelled as well, and will not assigned to another act, thus Lord of the Lost will keep voting code “09”.
Different points will be awarded
The other thing that will be changed is that the international jury will now award the following points to the competing songs: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12. Which means that 5 and 7 points will not be awarded. There are now 368 points to be awarded in total, and the same number can be awarded by the televoting public.

How the winner is chosen
The winner of tonight’s German national final will be chosen by 50% international jury votes, and 50% public televotes.

We will see the German winner of tonight’s national Grand Final perform in the Grand Final on May 13th 2023, because Germany is one Of the Big Five countries, which means that this country does not have to compete in the Semi-finals, and immediately qualifies for the Grand Final.
