Eurovision 2024: The battle of the girl bops

This year there are several girl bops to discover in the line-up of the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 in Malmö (Sweden), what to think of Malta’s “Loop” or Cyprus’ “Liar”. They might all be in different Semi-finals, but they might just have to fight it out in the Grand Final, we do not know yet. Let’s dive into this year’s battle of the girl bops!

What is a girl bop?

First things first, what is a girl bop really all about? Well, we can define it as an empowering pop song, sung by a strong girl or woman, discussing struggles in her life that she had overcome by being powerful or by giving her opinion on the matter. The performances of girl bops can be recognized by a strong voice, kick-ass dance moves, and dancers that are merely there to enforce the power of the main female singer.

Cyprus: Silia Kapsis – Liar

Yes, we have found our first girl bop, it is Silia Kapsis singing “Liar” as the first one to perform in this year’s contest in Semi-final 1. Silia Kapsis sings that she is done with lies and dishonest people, not only in relationships, but in general. In the clip we see the dancers enhancing Silia’s presence, ensuring that this song and performance have everything a girl bop needs.

Malta: Sarah Bonnici – Loop

Do not throw Sarah Bonnici for a loop, because she will find you and will deal with you! This is also a girl bop if we have ever heard one! Spicey, but not to be mistaken lyrics, strong dance moves, and dancers that do not upstage the main queen of this song, which is most definitely Sarah herself. Open your car windows and start driving with Sarah’s girl Bop, “Loop”, chanting from your window. Sarah performs first in Semi-final 2.

Greece: Marina Satti – Zari

This is also a true girl bop, may it be that Marina Satti managed to bring on some authentic Greek elements to her song. “Zari” is an odd one in the girl bops this year, but all the elements are there. A strong female singer, powerful lyrics, and if we have to believe Marina’s social media, she will also bring some dancers that enhance the show that is truly about Marina. Greece performs third in Semi-final 2.

Austria: Kaleen – We Will Rave

No more sadness, let’s talk togetherness, with Kaleen’s “We Will Rave”. Kaleen is both a great singer and a magical dancer, so combine this together and we already have the “strong performer” part which is needed for a girl bop. Then we have the song that really tries to unite people, and on social media Kaleen showed that she will not be alone on the grand Eurovision stage, she will rave together with a bunch of dancers. Kaleen will perform 6th in Semi-final 2.

Georgia: Nutsa Buzaladze – Firefighter

In her music video Nutsa is surrounded by fire, but she does not care, she is above it; this is exactly the attitude that we need for a true girl bop. Next to this, we see the background dancers of Nutsa in her video. Add up the strong lyrics and the nobody can hurt me anymore attitude of Nutsa, and yes, here we have another one! A girl bop, if there ever existed one. Nutsa performs 11th in Semi-final 2.
