Last month it seemed like the Swedish municipality of Sandviken wanted to aim for a Eurovision host city bid, but now it has become clear that this idea will not transpire.
Eurovision bid
On June 8th 2023 it was made public that the Sandviken municipality will not participate in a bid to host Eurovision 2024 in Sweden. Proposals were made and reviewed by the Sandviken council, but there was decided not to progress with the bid to host the contest. The final reason for Sandviken to not be part of the bid has not been disclosed.
Plans
The plans for the bid of Sandviken entailed the contest being hosted in the Göransson Arena, a venue that also hosted the second Semi-final of Melodifestivalen, the televised national selection of Sweden, back in 2010. This arena can host 10,000 people.
Eurovision 2023
This year’s contest is won by Sweden’s Loreen with the song “Tattoo”. Loreen’s win marks the first time a female singer has won the Eurovision Song Contest twice, since Loreen also won the 2012 song contest with the song “Euphoria”, which is one of the most successful songs in Eurovision history. Next to this, Loreen is the second singer to win the contest twice; Irish Johnny Logan came before her.
