Eurovision 2023: Liverpool is getting ready

Liverpool is getting more and more ready to welcome thousands of Eurovision fans in this city, but is also getting set to charm millions of people across the globe when the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 makes its way to the United Kingdom.

The city of Liverpool is having all sorts of events and decorative elements around the city to celebrate Ukrainian culture, but also all sorts of things that unite us, as human-beings, with music.

Superlambanana

The statue known as the “Superlambanana” is getting a make-over especially for this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, because the statue will be painted in the colours of the Ukrainian flag, blue and yellow. Normally the iconic Liverpudlian statue is yellow, but for the contest the top part if painted blue. The statue stands in front of the Avril Roverts Library in Liverpool (Tithebarn Street).

Daffodils

No less than 1,859 daffodils (flowers) were handed out on March 19th 2023 on the Royal Albert Dock in Liverpool; this site is very close to where the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 will be held. The daffodils represented “the road to Eurovision” and “the solidarity with Ukraine”. The fact that 1,859 daffodils were handed out, marked the miles between Ukraine and Liverpool. The daffodils were given away outside the Beatles Story at the Britannia Courtyard and in front of the Martin Luther King Junior Building.

Sam Ryder’s Eurovision 2022 outfit

The glittery overall that the 2022 British representative, Sam Ryder (Space Man), wore on-stage will be put on display in the British Music Experience in Liverpool. The stylist of the overall is Luke Day. The overall is bedazzled with pearls, glass crystals, and other embellishments. The suit came to being as a tribute to the band Queen and Sam Ryder’s interest in astrology. The very sparkly overall took 210 hours to make, and entailed 15,000 different jewels.

Eurovision events on the Concert Square

There will be two weeks during which Liverpool’s Concert Square will be taken over by all things Eurovision. The first event will take place on April 30th 2023 when singers and bands will entertain the crowd outside of the bars of the Concert Square. Below you can find different events which are going to take place on the square.

  • Fusion: Hosting The Euro Fans Club from May 8th 2023
  • La’go and Zanzibar: Give-aways and drinking games, as well as special nights of performances
  • Cheers and Revolver: Drag quizzes, tribute acts, Abba-esque makeup stations

Eurovision 2023

The Eurovision Song Contest 2023 will take place on May 9th, 11th, and 13th 2023 in Liverpool, United Kingdom. 37 countries will compete for the crown. This year’s Eurovision Song Contest will be a joint venture, since last year’s winner Ukraine cannot organize the contest on home soil because of the ongoing war with Russia.
