Dihaj (Diana Hajiyeva) to represent Azerbaijan at Eurovision 2017!

Diana Hajiyeva, who is from the electronic music collective, Dihaj, has been internally selected to represent Azerbaijan at the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 in Kiev.

Dihaj, who lives in Baku, has gained popularity due to her experimental-pop music style. She already tried to represent the country back in 2011, when she entered “Mili Seçim Turu”. She came 4th in her heat which saw eventual winner Eldar Gasimov qualify from. She sang Alyosha‘s “Sweet People” (Ukraine 2010) during the show but ultimately didn’t impress enough to make it through to the next stage. She was also one of Samra‘s backing vocalists in Stockholm, but appeared off stage during the performance of “Miracle” at the Globen.

Her style of music is very different from what we are used to from Azerbaijan at Eurovision, but with the broadcaster now celebrating their 10th anniversary coming up in the contest, perhaps they are looking for something new. They already have a new Head of Delegation coming in for 2017, and perhaps after looking at their latest results since 2014, maybe we can expect something different this time from Azerbaijan, and maybe a step away from Sweden. Dihaj, is an established star in Azerbaijan, so a step away from Swedish bought songs might both make sense for her as an artists and also a step in the right direction for the broadcaster.

Talking of their sound, lead vocalist Diana says:

“We all come from completely different musical backgrounds, so our sound is quite electric. That’s why we’ve never really been interested in trying to pinpoint the genre of the music we play. Just play what seems right and leave the rest to the listeners, rights?”

Dihaj got their breakthrough in 2014 when they released their 2014 single “I Break Again” which was co-written by Diana Hajiyeva and world famous jazz pianist Isfar Sarabsky. Their recent single “Complain” is one of the tracks from their debut album.
