Australia: Over 700 songs submitted for first ever national final

Australian broadcaster, SBS have revealed the level of excitement gathered in response to their call for submission for country’s first national final selection during a three week period in which submissions could be submitted via a song portal.   The media outlet reported that the huge response has produced a wide range of genres.

SBS also report that the jury panel have reviewed all the submissions and that the songs that get shortlisted will now be paired with artists.

There have not been many reports of what artists may be involved but SBS have confirmed that we can expect an announcement ‘very soon’ regarding some high-caliber performers.  The national final will be held on the Gold Coast on February 8&9.

The winner of Eurovision – Australia Decides will go on to represent Australia at the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 in Israel.

Do you think the advent of a national final was a good move in response to the low public vote that Jessica Mauboy received in the grand finale at Lisbon in 2018?  Could this be a way for Australia to send a song that will have the ability to reach the the upper end of the leaderboard in Israel?
