Who are Lord of The Lost? Meet the German Eurovision 2023 representatives

The German public broadcaster, ARD, chose a pre-selection as the method of selecting their new representative for Eurovision, under the name Unser Lied für Liverpool. Eight performances in the grand final, although Frida Gold withdrew at the last minute due to the illness of the lead singer, which prevented her from being present. Will Chuch was the favorite for the professional jury, however, Lord of the Lost swept the televote with 146 points. They obtained enough support from the public to win the pre-selection, as they placed fifth with the jury.

The metal band will bring their song “Blood & Glitter” to Liverpool with a look that leaves no one indifferent and will continue with the same staging for Eurovision, but more perfected and suitable for the stage space of the contest.

Get to Know Lord of The Lost

Lord of The Lost is a gothic metal band created in 2007 by vocalist Chris Harms in Hamburg as a solo project that over time added more musicians. It was originally called Lord, which was Harms’ nickname, before later changing to its current name when it became a group. Chris Harms already had a background in metal from his time with the bands Philiae and The Pleasures, although in a more supporting role.

Over their sixteen-year career, they have released four EPs and seven albums, including Empyrean, Thornstar, and Judas with very good positions in the German charts. At the end of 2022, they released their latest album under the same name as their Eurovision single, which is having great success, as well as with their new international tour, which is already sold out in some countries.

The current members of the band are Chris Harms (vocals, guitar, and cello), Class Grenayde (bass), Gared Dirge (piano, keyboards, percussion, guitar, and theremin), Pi Stoffers (guitar), and Niklas Kahl (drums).

A while ago, they joined the preeminent company for metal bands, Napalm Records, to continue with the project.

“Blood & Glitter” their song for Liverpool

The song represents the band’s personality very well and conveys a positive message, that what’s important is living in the moment. Currently, the music video has over one million views on YouTube and almost two and a half million listens on Spotify.

Lyrics of “Blood & Glitter”

Original lyrics

Blood and glitter
Sweet and bitter
We’re so happy we could die
What we are is but a choice
A promise to ourselves
We are free to break and change
Never forget? Let it go
This or that? No need to know
Whether above or below
We are all from the same blood

Blood and glitter
Sweet and bitter
We’re so happy we could die
Blood and glitter
Sweet and bitter
We’re so happy we could die
Blood and glitter
Saint and sinner
We do fall before we rise
Now go, go
Let your blood flow, flow
With broken wings we’ll learn to fly
We are blood and glitter

Keep your head up in the clouds
With two feet on the ground
Life’s too fast so make it count
Never forget? Let it go
This or that? No need to know
Whether above or below
We are all from the same blood

Blood and glitter
Sweet and bitter
We’re so happy we could die
Blood and glitter
Saint and sinner
We do fall before we rise
Now go, go
Let your blood flow, flow
With broken wings we’ll learn to fly
We are blood and glitter
Oh, oh
Let your blood flow
Blood and glitter
Oh, oh
Let your blood flow

Blood and glitter
Sweet and bitter
We’re so happy we could die
Blood and glitter
Sweet and bitter
We’re so happy we could die
Blood and glitter
Saint and sinner
We do fall before we rise
Now go, go
Let your blood flow, flow
With broken wings we’ll learn to fly
We are blood and glitter

Germany in Eurovision

Germany was one of the founding countries, debuting in the first year of the Eurovision Song Contest in 1956 and has participated in every edition without exception. In the early 2000s, Germany joined the Big Five countries. Due to their financial contribution, they receive the benefit of membership which guarantees them a place in the grand final of the festival.

Among all their participations, they have achieved thirty-five Top 10 finishes and have reached the top three on eleven occasions. On the other hand, they have eight last places, the most recent being in 2022 with Malik Harris. While they failed to qualify for the final only once, in 1996 with Planet of Blue.

The German country has won twice, the first time in 1982 with Nicole and the song “Ein bißchen Frieden”; the second with Lena and her catchy “Satellite”.

Their recent participations have not been successful, with poor results predominating except for 2018. This year they will try to bounce back with a metal song and a powerful and extravagant band like Lord of The Lost.
