Change of direction on BBC’s Eurovision way. After Josh Dubovie’s terrible result, as the last time they went on choosing their entrant through a national selection process, and a series of disappointing results for the country for the last 13 years (except Jade’s My Time which came in a respectable 5th place) the broadcaster has decided to give the public a say on who do they want to wave the colours of the Union Jack in Sweden through a talent-show selection format.
British tabloid Express revealed the news minutes ago, but still an official confirmation from BBC’s Eurovision Board of Directors is expected to be made.
It looks like authors and songwriters and acts themselves will be given the time of 2 months to send in their entries to BBC’s headquarters in London, who are also invited by the broadcaster itself. For a track to be involved in the selection, it just needs to be original. Then, a special jury panel will shortlist all the entries to a final line-up where the viewers at home will decide who’s going to Stockholm for the UK.
Hugh Goldsmith, a recognisable and well-known record label executive who helped important artists to the top of the charts, is taking the lead for the project; while Graham Norton will return to deliver commentary for the Eurovision in May.
“Eurovision is one of the highlights of my year and I love the fact that the BBC is launching its biggest song search ever,” Graham reveals. HoD of Delegation and British producer Guy Freeman added: “This year really will be the biggest song search for Eurovision the BBC has ever undertaken. “With input from key industry figures and fan associations, plus with the public having the final say we are looking forward to seeing a true People’s Eurovision entry representing the UK at next year’s competition in Sweden.”
Electro Velvet represented the country at last year’s Eurovision edition in Vienna, coming 25th out of 27 contestants in the final, another failing score for the country after such stars as Engelbert Humperdinck, Bonnie Tyler or Blue, who also managed not to do so well. How excited are you on this? Did you want the BBC to open a public selection?

So the UK are wanting a contestant who isn’t the worst rather than one who is the best.
