Spain: RTVE to select internally for Eurovision 2020

RTVE has just announced that they will select the next Spanish entry for the Eurovision Song Contest internally. Yesterday, it was revealed that Operación Triunfo was no longer the national selection for the competition. The broadcaster has stated that it will be a well-known performer whose name will be revealed very soon.

After two years of having used Operación Triunfo to select their entrant, RTVE has decided to change the selection procedure for the Eurovision Song Contest. The broadcaster is back to an internal process where RTVE’s board will choose who will wave the country’s flag in Rotterdam. Their decision will be announced very soon.

“We already know the first details of the Spanish entry for Eurovision 2020: our next representative will be a well-known artist selected internally by RTVE”, said RTVE. “We will reveal our decision shortly”, they added.

In the last few years, RTVE has tried different procedures to select the Eurovision act, but none has seemed to work really well. In 2012 and 2014, Spain achieved a 10th place with Pastora Soler, selected internally with an external song selection, and Ruth Lorenzo, winner of the national final that year. These are the best recent results of Spain in Eurovision. The last time the Spanish broadcaster used an internal selection was in 2015 when Edurne represented her country in Vienna with the song “Amanecer”. However, she only managed to reach the 21st place with 15 points.
