Netherlands 2024: A record-breaking number of songs were submitted to AVROTROS

The Dutch national broadcaster, AVROTROS, as received a record-breaking number of songs from artists to represent the country in the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö (Sweden). The number of submitted potential entries is 600.

The song submission window close on September 30th 2023.

Potential Dutch Eurovision entries

Among the 600 potential Dutch Eurovision entries is a divers range of musical genres, but also when it comes down to languages the submitted songs are divers. Most of the songs are in English, approximately hundred songs are in Dutch, and some of them even have lyrics in French, Arabic, Turkish, Spanish, and Italian.

It is now up to an especially assembled selection commission to choose the Dutch 2024 entry.

About the selection commission the chairman, Twan van de Nieuwenhuijzen, says the following:

“The interest to compete is huge and very divers. It is great to see how the contest is very much alive in the Netherlands. Young and well-known music artists have sent songs. From pop music to dance, and from rock to soul, and hip-hop, all music genres are represented among the 600 potential entries. I am sure that we can find the best song possible to represent us in the 2024 contest, mainly because of the submitted songs and the wonderful conversations we have had with artists, record labels, composers, songwriters, and producers, in the past couple of months.”

Who is in the Dutch selection commission?

The following judges are in the Dutch selection commission:

  • Twan van de Nieuwenhuizen: Chairman of the commission, known from previous contest editions as Head of Contest.
  • Carolien Borgers: Stand-up comedian, radio host, voice actress, and singer.
  • Cornald Maas: Presenter, TV maker, and journalist.
  • Hila Noorzai: Presenter, columnist, and radio host.
  • Jaap Reesema: Singer.
  • Jacqueline Govaert: Singer.
  • Sander Lantinga: Radio host.

Eurovision 2023

The Netherlands was plagued vigorously during the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 in Liverpool (UK), becauseduring several pre-parties the 2023 Dutch representatives, Mia Nicolai and Dion Cooper, were not able to sing their entry, “Burning Daylight”, flawlessly. This earned them a bad reputation, which resulted in the Netherlands ending in a 13th place (of 15) in Semi-final 1, marking the first time the Netherlands was not in the Grand Final of the contest since 2015 (Trijntje Oosterhuis, Walk Along).
