The extensive Sanmarinese pre-selection process has concluded, revealing Megara as San Marino’s representative at the forthcoming Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö.

Seventeen artists performed in the grand finale of Una Voce per San Marino 2024, all vying for victory. However, only the Spanish group Megara and their song “11:11” garnered the jury’s favor, earning them the opportunity to represent the country in Malmö.

Get to Know Megara

The Madrid-based group, notably recognized for their participation in Benidorm Fest 2023 with the song “Arcadia,” clinched the title as San Marino’s representative after winning the Una Voce per San Marino 2024 final.

Formed in 2015, their music embodies a genre they coined themselves after realizing they were consistently pigeonholed into a specific style within rock. They termed it “fuchsia rock,” in line with their aesthetics. Describing themselves as “a blend of the sinister and cotton candy,” Megara sets themselves apart not only in music but also in their image and concert performances. Just as the color pink isn’t typical in this genre, neither is dance, a prominent element in Megara’s shows.

The band’s previous experience in Eurovision pre-selection was a 4th place in the Benidorm Fest 2023 when they attempted to represent Spain in the Eurovision Song Contest.

San Marino at Eurovision

San Marino made its Eurovision debut in 2008 with Miodio and the song “Complice,” securing only 5 points, which placed them last in their semi-final. The following two years, they took a period of reflection and did not participate.

They returned in 2011 with Senhit and “Stand By,” which only reached 16th place in the semi-final, far from qualifying. From 2012 to 2014, they participated with Valentina Monetta, who, on her third attempt with the song “Maybe,” made it to the Grand Final for the first time in their history, finishing 24th.

From 2015 to 2018, their luck waned as they failed to reach the final. Valentina Monetta returned in a duet with Jimmie Willson, but this time they finished last in their semi-final. Singer Serhat returned in 2019 to secure San Marino’s second historic Grand Final pass, achieving their best position to date, 19th place.

In 2020, Senhit returned after her 2011 attempt. The festival was canceled due to the Coronavirus pandemic, and San Marino decided to return in 2021, this time with the famous rapper FloRida and his danceable “Adrenalina,” maintaining their presence in the Grand Final but securing 22nd place.

The last two years, where Una Voce Per San Marino served as the national pre-selection, haven’t brought great results to the microstate, as the famous Achille Lauro finished 14th in the 2022 semi-final, and the boys from Piqued Jacks didn’t get past last place in 2023 with 0 points, achieving their worst historical result.
