Matt Normet has confirmed that he will leave his post as Estonian Head of Delegation and Executive Producer of Eesti Laul after this year’s Eurovision Song Contest. After being appointed to his current position in late spring 2008, Normet has brought Estonia reached the grand final five times, including three top ten entries in 2009, 2012, and 2015. In his press release, he stated, “We’ve had 10 years of constant growth and transformed what was merely a Eurovision selection tool into the most important pop music event in Estonia. I am so proud of the work that we’ve achieved here, but after so long at the top, it’s time for some fresh blood. Progress and innovation is born out of charting unknown territory and I am starting to feel like I know all the answers. In environments as dynamic as music and television this can only slow down progress. So after Portugal, I will step down as Estonian Head of Delegation and Executive Producer of Eesti Laul. It’s important for me to leave while we’re still at the top of our game to allow someone new to come in and make their mark on what we’ve created”.
When asked about his plan after Eurovision, he said that nothing is sure yet. “I’ve not decided what is coming next for me, but I can’t wait to see what comes next”.
However, things might turn out differently if the Baltic country triumphs in Lisbon, “Unless we win Eurovision this year, in which case I am definitely doing Eurovision in Tallinn!”
Marje Jurtšenko, the editor-in-chief of ETV, assures the journalists that Normet will give his hundred percent to make Estonia finish on a high this year. She also wished him all the best.
“He has been working with so much passion and dedication for almost 10 years. We completely understand his desire to move forward. We have not decided yet who is going to take over his position. But, we very much hope Mart will succeed in his future endeavors”.
Aitäh, Mart! Thank you for bringing the best of Estonia’s music scene to Eurovision stage.
