Who is Sissal? Get to Know Denmark’s Representative at Eurovision 2025

Denmark has chosen Sissal as their entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2025 after a thrilling victory at the Dansk Melodi Grand Prix, Denmark’s national selection. She won the superfinal by just one point, securing her spot to represent her country this May in Basel, Switzerland.

How Sissal Won Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2025

The 55th edition of Dansk Melodi Grand Prix featured 8 competing artists battling for the ticket to Eurovision 2025. The contest was divided into two phases: in the first round, juries and televotes each counted for 50% to determine the 3 superfinalists.

In the final showdown, Sissal won the jury vote and came second in the televote, enough to crown her Denmark’s representative for the 69th Eurovision Song Contest with her song “Hallucination”.

Get to Know Sissal

Sissal Jóhanna Norðberg Niclase, known simply as Sissal, is a rising star currently living in Copenhagen, Denmark’s capital since she moved there in 2020. However, she hails from Tórshavn in the Faroe Islands, where she grew up surrounded by supportive parents who instilled in her an unshakable belief in herself.

Although not from a musical family, her mother recalls that Sissal was singing before she could even talk. She would sing for her family whenever she could, and at just 10 years old, she performed on a major stage for the first time in a music competition back in the Faroe Islands—and won.

For Sissal, competing in Dansk Melodi Grand Prix was a lifelong dream come true. She’s been an avid follower of both the Danish selection and Eurovision itself, describing them as events where she feels “at home.”

She’s already made her mark in the music industry with several singles and an EP. Her debut single “Deep End” was released last year, followed by “Far From Sober” and “Hear Me Now”. Danish radio show Karriekanonen on P3 even named her as one of the artists to watch.

Starting 2025 strong, she released her first EP “Hear Me Now”, featuring five tracks, two of which were previously unreleased.

Still early in her career, Sissal dreams big: she hopes to one day be the voice of a Disney princess, perform for the King of Denmark, and tour festivals across Europe.

Her musical inspirations include Scandinavian pop powerhouses like Dagny and Robyn, as well as global icons like Ariana Grande, whose career Sissal aspires to emulate.

Throughout her journey, Sissal has faced criticism about her appearance, with some questioning her size. But rather than let it hold her back, she’s embraced it as a source of strength. She’s determined to break stereotypes, proving that women have so much to give—even after motherhood. Sissal makes her debut at Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2025 radiating confidence and empowerment.

All About “Hallucination”: Sissal’s Song for Eurovision 2025

Sissal herself was part of the songwriting team behind “Hallucination”, collaborating with Malthe Johansen, Chris Chordz, Line Spangsberg, Marcus Winther-John, and Swedish hitmakers Linnea Deb and Melanie Wehbe.

She openly acknowledges the inspiration from Eurovision legend Loreen. In fact, she recalls stepping into the studio and saying, “Let’s make a Loreen.” For Sissal, it’s what everyone wants—even if they don’t admit it.

Interestingly, the title “Hallucination” came before the song. It was born from a brainstorming session with the songwriting team, who then built the track around this powerful concept. The lyrics explore a love so perfect, so surreal, it feels like a hallucination.

You show me more
More than meets the eye
You open all the doors inside my mind

I see colours
I never saw before
A thousand shades of light come to life

Making me question
All that I thought true
All that I’m seeing through you

My vision’s blurry
But I can see clearly
Baby, I’m losing control

You’re my hallu-
Hallucination
Hallu-
Hallucination

I’m paranoid
Slipping from reality
You’re leading me into another fantasy

Making me question
All that I thought true
All that I’m seeing through you

My vision’s blurry
But I can see clearly
Maybe, I’m losing control

You’re my hallu-
Hallucination
Hallu-
Hallucination
A new revelation
Hallu-
Hallucination

Worlds are changing, darkness fading
I follow you to the end and now I’m changing (now I’m changing)

It’s a new sensation, ooh
(Worlds are changin’)
(Darkness fading)
(My Hallucination)
Hallucination

(Worlds are changin’)
(Darkness fading)
(My Hallucination)

You’re my hallu-
Hallucination

Hallu-
Hallucination

Hey yeah-yeah-yeah
Hey yeah-yeah-yeah

Hallucination

You’re my hallu-
Hallucination
Hallu-
Hallucination

Denmark’s History at Eurovision

Denmark has participated 54 times at Eurovision, with 44 appearances in the Grand Final. Their debut was back in 1957, finishing 3rd. The country’s early years were strong, consistently landing in the top 10.

Their first victory came in 1963 with “Dansevise” by Grethe and Jørgen Ingmann. After a hiatus from 1967 to 1977, they returned with several top 10 finishes, including two 3rd places, before withdrawing again in 1994 and 1998.

A historic second victory arrived in 2000 with the Olsen Brothers’ “Fly On The Wings Of Love”. Denmark nearly repeated the feat as hosts in 2001, finishing 2nd in Copenhagen.

Unfortunately, this winning streak ended abruptly in 2002 with a last-place finish, keeping them out of the contest in 2003. Their third victory came in 2013 with Emmelie de Forest’s “Only Teardrops”.

Notably, Denmark has twice won on Swedish soil (2000 and 2013), although their results in 1985 and 1992 were less impressive.

In recent years, Denmark has struggled to reach the final. Last year in Malmö, SABA’s “Sand” placed 12th in the semi-final, missing out with 36 points.
