Turin 2022: This year’s Eurovision postcards

Last year’s Eurovision postcards for Rotterdam 2021 were filmed remotely as to not involve too many people in the process of creating the postcards for the competing songs due to the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic. This year similar actions are taken to create the postcards. The videos will, of course, be related to this year’s Eurovision slogan, “The Sound of Beauty”.

The postcards of the Eurovision Song Contest are the 40 second videos that are shown before the start of a song. The postcards are meant to promote the host nation or the country where the competing artist comes from.

What we know so far

What we know so far is that there have been social media posts by the upcoming Eurovision artists of 2022 in which they show that they are filming their postcards in their own country. These videos are mostly shot in front of a green screen as to add themes of each postcard in later.

What the main theme of the postcards will be is yet to be revealed, but we do know that there has been filming going on in several Italian well-known and less well-known cities and villages across the country.

Some of the locations that we already know that will be featured are:

  • Perugia
  • Venice
  • Naples
  • Rome

Last year’s Eurovision postcards

The postcards of the 2021 postcards in Rotterdam revolved around the artists being displayed in a tiny house that was placed in the Netherlands’ most significant landscapes and sites. The theme of the postcards was for the artists being displayed in a setting that we all had been in the most for almost 2 years, and that was home, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Before COVID-19

In the past the host nation would go to the countries of the competing acts to film the postcards or the other way around, the acts would fly to the host nation and record their postcards there. Most of the time the artists would take part in local activities or see local sites in their videos.

In 2014 Denmark took another approach to the postcards by creating the flag of each country with unusual objects. These videos were shot on a typical site of the competing country.
