Romania 2024: Still not sure whether this country will be in the upcoming contest or not

For some weeks now it is rumoured that Romania might not be in the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 in Malmö (Sweden), but since a couple of days we do know that there has not been a final decision made just yet.

There are “talks”

Romania’s national broadcaster, TVR, has stated that it is in talks with the EBU about whether they are going to participate or not in the upcoming contest in Sweden. The reason for a possible withdrawal would be finances. No definite decision has been made yet though.

The deadline for countries to compete in Eurovision 2024 was September 15th 2023, and countries that do want to withdraw after this initial date have until October 11th 2023 to do so.

Still a chance

There is still a chance that Romania will participate in Malmö, which would also explain the statement of TVR that there are talks with the European Broadcasting Union. The poor result of Romania last year does not help their case either; they came in second to last in Semi-final 2, although the costs of Romania’s 2023 participation was as high as € 382,000.
