A Review: Eurovision 2016 Italy

After topping the bookies and fan favorite lists last year, Italy takes a slight turn this year with Francesca Michielin, “No Degree of Separation.” The song is a serious piece of quality pop music, but is it a serious contender for Eurovision top honors?

I was surprised with this entry from Italy. To be honest, I thought Italy should have won last year. I was fully expecting to have Italy at the top of my favorites this year. Sadly, Italy is being out-shinned by each of its Big Fives mates. Although the song is well written and Francesca will no doubt be vocally on point, this song will ultimately become forgettable.

Francesca was not the winner of the Festival di Sanremo, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t belong on the Eurovision stage. She is an X-Factor alum and Nessun Grado di Separazione is burning up the Italian charts. As we learned in 2013 with Marco Mengoni, that Italian success doesn’t exactly translate into points.

I like “No Degree of Separation” no… I love the track, but I’m not sure it’s enough to make it into the top 5 this year. Italy is another country mixing up languages and I think that’ll ultimately help. The music video is young (fresh) without being immature and that is the vibe Francesca gives us as a performer. I worry about this act, but I’m loving this track.

What’s your favorite entry from Italy?
