The annual rules of the Sanremo Festival
The annual rule of the Sanremo Festival is that although an artist has won, he or she can still refuse to compete in the Eurovision Song Contest. If so, then another artists will be chosen to go to the contest for Italy.
Marco Mengoni chose to go himself.
In 2013 Marco Mengoni also won the Festival di Sanremo, and he also went to the the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 in Malmö (Sweden); there he came in 7th (of 26) in the Grand Final with the song “L’Essenziale”.
Italy’s Marco Mengoni will immediately perform in the Grand Final of the contest of 2023, because Italy is one of the Big Five countries, which means that the country does not have to compete in either of the Semi-finals.
The Eurovision Song Contest 2023 will take place on May 9th, 11th, and 13th 2023 in Liverpool, United Kingdom. 37 countries will take the stage this year.
