Italy 2023: It is Marco Mengoni for Eurovision 2023!

Marco Mengoni has won the Festival di Sanremo 2023 last night, which is also the Italian national selection to decide who is going to the Eurovision Song Contest. All 5 days of the festival Marco ended up in the number 1 position, so that he has won does not come as surprise. Marco Mengoni will represent Italy with the song “Due Vite” (“Two Lives”) in Liverpool, United Kingdom.

UPDATE: Marco has mentioned in an interview today that he “might change the song”.

Festival di Sanremo 2023

Last night the Italian Grand Final of the Festival di Sanremo 2023 took place in the Ariston Theatre in the Italian city of Sanremo. 28 acts competed like they did in the four nights before, but eventually it was Marco Mengoni who is going to the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 in Liverpool, United Kingdom.

The judging of the Grand Final of the Sanremo Festival 2023 was done by televoting (34%), journalists (33%), and a demoscopic jury (33%).

The annual rules of the Sanremo Festival

The annual rule of the Sanremo Festival is that although an artist has won, he or she can still refuse to compete in the Eurovision Song Contest. If so, then another artists will be chosen to go to the contest for Italy.

Marco Mengoni chose to go himself.

Eurovision 2013

In 2013 Marco Mengoni also won the Festival di Sanremo, and he also went to the the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 in Malmö (Sweden); there he came in 7th (of 26)  in the Grand Final with the song “L’Essenziale”.

Eurovision 2022

Italy’s Marco Mengoni will immediately perform in the Grand Final of the contest of 2023, because Italy is one of the Big Five countries, which means that the country does not have to compete in either of the Semi-finals.

The Eurovision Song Contest 2023 will take place on May 9th, 11th, and 13th 2023 in Liverpool, United Kingdom. 37 countries will take the stage this year.
