Interview Eurovision Eurovision 2016 Denmark

Kristel Lisberg: “My song is about a bad breakup and how it feels being left behind” (Danish finalist – Exclusive Interview)

ESC+Plus has talked to Kristel Lisberg, finalist of this year’s Danish national selection for Eurovision. Kristel will perform “Who Needs a Heart” in the final of DMGP 2016 to take place on February 13.

ESC+Plus: Hello! First of all, thank you so much for your time and congratulations on having been selected to take part in the Danish national selection for Eurovision 2016!

Can you tell us about you, your musical career and important achievements?

I started singing when I was very young and I went on tours with my dad who is a country singer, famous in the Faroe Islands. I did my first single when I was 14 years old and got my career started and later I went for the Danish X factor. I have been a lot on stage and I do have my own little fan base and two months ago I got a call if I would like to participate in the Danish Melodi Grand Prix.

E+: What impelled you to take part in “DMGP 2016”?

I was asked If I would like to do an audition for the song “Who Needs a Heart” and I was chosen to sing it. I was so excited and I knew straight away that I wanted to sing the song, because I could identify with the lyrics and I love when a song is able to touch people’s heart, which I definitely think that this song can.

E+: How did you feel when you knew you had qualified for the final? Did you expect it?

I did not expect to get the call for the audition, but when I had sung the song I got amazing feedback from the people behind it. I was really happy when they chose me and it was a dream come true, to get a chance to be on stage and sing my heart out for so many people.

E+: What it would mean for you to represent Denmark as a Faroese singer?

I love Denmark so it would mean the world for me, and I think the Faroe Islands would be really proud to be part of this competition

E+: Can you tell us about your song? What is the story behind the lyrics?

The song is about a bad breakup and how it feels being left behind, when you thought it would be forever. But it’s also about following your dreams, and not just be dreaming about it. The lyrics say “Im gonna dream wide awake”.

E+: Why do you think your song has to be selected for Stockholm? What are you strengths to reach the top in the competition?

I think that this big ballad can touch people’s heart. It also has a Eurovision sound, but it could also do good in the radio. It is catchy and people can sing along in the chorus. My strength is my voice and the will to give my all for this competition. I will definitely sing my heart out.

E+: Do you usually watch Eurovision? What are your favorite songs in the history of the competition?

Yes, I usually watch it together with my family. My favorite songs are “Fly on the wings of love” by the Olsens brothers, “Euphoria” by Loreen, “Only teardrops” by Emmilie de Forest.

E+: If you could choose a Eurovision former participant to sing along with, who would it be?

I think it would be Loreen, she is amazing.

E+: Besides Eurovision, what are your plans for this year?

I am graduating at school and then, I just want to make music.

E+: Finally, can you send a message for our readers and Eurovision fans?

Yes, you should vote for this beautiful song. I will do my best for this song and performance. We need a big ballad to go far in the competition.

E+: Thanks for your time and good luck!
