Interview Eurovision Eurovision 2015 Moldova

Kitty Brucknell: “I really feel like I have a ‘reason to fight’ now” (Moldovan participant – Interview)

ESC+Plus has talked to Kitty Brucknell, participant of the Moldovan selection for Eurovisión 2015. The Bristish singer will perform “Remix” at today’s semi-final.

ESC+Plus: Hello Kitty! First of all congratulations on having been selected as one of the 24 participants for the Moldovan national selection.

What did you feel when you were told you were in?

I was so excited! Really! I had no idea they would pick me for the top 24. I wanted to jump up in the air and yell! Everyone was being so quiet, it was so strange. I just wanted to celebrate!

E+: Can you tell us about you, your musical evolution and important achievements?

Well, my stage name is Kitty, but my real name is Kimberley. I’ve been singing since I was about 15, so it’s been a long time and a lot of hard work to get to this point! I actually did the X Factor in the UK in 2011, and I came 7th place, which really helped me in terms of establishing a fan base and my brand. I’d probably describe myself as “Broadway Pop”. I love big anthemic songs and I’m really passionate about putting on big performances. And I love crazy wigs and crazy costumes. It’s all about the dressing up.

E+: This isn’t your first attempt in a national competition for Eurovision 2015 as you were competing in the on-line voting of the Swiss national selection. How do you face this new Eurovision attempt?

I first entered the Swiss competition because I figured it would be a good opportunity to see what the reaction would be – we sort of did it on a whim! But then things went mental – there was so many interviews and people really kind of got behind my song, it found this whole new fan base. After I didn’t get through the internet phase, we figured my opportunity was over, but we noticed that I had a lot of Eastern European fans visiting my Facebook and my website. After that, we discovered Moldova were still looking for entries – so I submitted two songs and now here I am!

E+: What it would mean for you to represent Moldavia in Vienna?

Everything. Literally everything. I have struggled so much to get even the slightest bit of recognition. In the UK, it seems that people always want to knock you down with any achievement, and I’ve been struggling against that for some time. So this is a huge deal to me.

E+: You are British but you are in the competition to represent another country. Have you ever tried to represent the United Kingdom at Eurovision?

We did approach them last year, but the “off-the-record” info was that they would never have an X Factor artist represent them since they have their own talent show and pool of artists. I can see their point, it’s just really disappointing.

E+: Your song is called “Remix”. Can you tell us about the song and the story behind the lyrics? How was the composition procedure?

It’s a song about rebirth. It’s about believing in yourself and that you can do whatever you set your mind to. It really does have a deep meaning to me, because it signifies all the struggles I’ve faced in the past four years. I really feel like I have a ‘reason to fight’ now.

E+: How are you preparing your performance at Moldovan semi-final ? Can you give us any hint?

Well, I’m hoping to find at the moment a fashion designer from Moldova who wants to get involved with my costume. I think it’s so important to involve talent from the country you’re representing. It gives others the chance to showcase themselves with a huge platform.

E+: Do you think that it is a handicap not being Moldovan to get the trophy?

Of course. But I also want to show Moldova that anyone can achieve anything if they set their mind to it.

E+: What are your main strengths so as to get the support of juries and televote to reach Eurovision?

Well, I would hope they would see that I’m something different and I can bring something unique to Eurovision!

E+: Have you listened to the other competing entries at Moldovan selection? Do you have any favourite?

Sunstroke Project by far. They are awesome!! I’m a huge fan.

E+: Do you usually watch Eurovision? Do you have any favorite song in history of the contest?

Probably Loreen’s Euphoria. I love it. It’s one of my favourite songs of all time.

E+: Besides Eurovision, what are your other plans for this year?

Well, I want to release an acoustic EP. And finally release Red Shoes, but I need the money to do it, because a song like that needs some serious financing to get right. I want to shoot the video in Egypt, and have it like a 10 minute epic movie. That song deserves something big.

E+: Finally, would you like to send a message for our readers?

That I love you guys so much and thank you so much for supporting me!!
