Exclusive Interview: Norway’s Nicoline lights us up with her Melodi Grand Prix entry

The exquisite blonde beauty talks about her musical journey and even teases us about her upcoming materials.

Nicoline Berg Kaasin has long been in our Melodi Grand Prix wish list ever since her participation in the Norwegian version of The Voice. Young, fearless, and visionary, the Bærum native quickly gains popularity in the Scandinavian music scene with her debut single No Suitcase (2016). Be it her crystal clear voice or energetic dance moves, she has always been an act to watch for. After her stint in popular TV show Stjernekamp, Nicoline is ready to level up her game with Light Me Up.

Speaking exclusively to ESCplus, Nicoline said that she can not wait to perform her song live in the grand final on March 10th.

“Melodi Grand Prix is a great opportunity to reach out to people with my music, and I am so excited to perform my entry”.

When asked about her musical background, she stated that she has been singing for as long as she can remember.

“Even though I have been singing ever since I was little, I’ve never actually performed in front of people until I was around fifteen. I studied music at high school and then I went to Bårdar Academy for two years to develop my skill even further”

The Norwegian beauty definitely knows what to bring to the table when it comes to musical artistry.

“I’ve always wanted to do my own music, so I started making music four years ago. If I have to describe, my music is a fun pop with RnB, hip-hop, and soul influence”.

Even though she is very grateful to be picked us one of Melodi Grand Prix finalists, Light Me Up was not specifically written for the competition. Instead, it was initially crafted for the Norwegian chart.

“I met Johan (Larsson) in his studio to write some new songs, and he played me some demos. One of these songs was “Light Me Up”. However, it was still half polished. We finished it with Emilie (Adams) afterwards. This was my first song with both of them, but I’m working with Johan weekly at the time and I’ve had a couple of session with Emilie as well. So I can say that more music is coming very soon!”

We are definitely excited for more aggressive pop bangers from Nicoline. When asked about her staging, the Znap singer confirmed that she’s almost done with the outfit and choreography. She only needs to wait for the rehearsals and the fittings.

Already a seasoned performer, Nicoline has done backing vocals for the like of Margaret Berger and Agnete Jonsson, who both have represented Norway in the Eurovision Song Contest. However, she admitted that the pressure is much bigger this time to perform as a solo artist.

“I loved doing “Stjernekamp”, because it made me more used to perform live on television. Hopefully, I can use this experience in the grand final of Melodi Grand Prix, and try not to get too nervous,” she said.

Nicoline added that participating at Stjernekamp was pretty challenging as she only had a little time to rehearse for each performance. Regardless what happened behind the scene, the girl really delivered on stage. Her take on Black Widow has caught the attention of Swedish singer and songwriter Martin Masarov who featured her on his saucy release, Fuckgirl.

“He invited me to Stockholm, and I got a chance to write the (Fuckgirl) lyrics together with the producers from Edgeology. It was amazing!”

In between her participation at The Voice and her go at this year’s Melodi Grand Prix, the high cheekbones singer has released several up-tempo singles such as Real Life, Znap, and No Suitcase. We can say these tracks are absolute treats for dance-pop music lovers.

“I acquired Real Life and Znap with the help of my former manager. They were sent to us from England, while No Suitcase was written and recorded in Oslo. I love these songs, but I have to say that I’m even more excited to release my own written music”.
