France: Internal selection to be used for 2020

According to the French website Le Parisien – French broadcaster France2 will be foregoing Destination Eurovision for the 2020 selection process.

“We want more control over the process, with an in-house selection,” says Alexandra Redde-Amiel, Director of Entertainment and Variety for France Télévisions.

It is reported that the combination of the results at the final in Tel Aviv, the disparity between the jury and public favourites at Destination Eurovision last year and simply poor ratings on the live broadcasts have all contributed to the decision.

France joins Spain and the United Kingdom as other members of the big 5 countries who have opted to select internally for Rotterdam rather than pursue a national final.

Last year after struggling with the jury vote at Destination Eurovision, Bilal Hassani went on to secure a huge portion of the public vote winning the ticket to Tel Aviv. Bilal went on to finish 16th in the Grand Final at Eurovision.
