Eurovision 2023: San Marino sees new way of voting as an opportunity

Just yesterday, November 22nd 2022, it became known that a new voting system will be implemented in the Eurovision Song Contest of 2023 in Liverpool, United Kingdom. The biggest change is that the Semi-finals will have no professional juries anymore, which means that the countries that proceed to the Grand Final will be decided by the public alone. Although this new rule was only communicated by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) yesterday the comments online are quite positive all the way down to enraged.

San Marino sees opportunities

The small country of San Marino sees opportunities when it comes down to the new voting rules in the Semi-finals, this was stated by the San Marinese Head of Delegation, Alessandro Capicchioni, during an interview with the San Marinese national broadcaster RTV. Capicchioni said in this interview that finally the San Marinese are able to cast their votes through online systems.

The current San Marinese voting

To date the San Marinese population is not able to cast their votes by phone, because this mini state is linked to the network of Italy, and because of this it is hard to distinguish a vote from San Marino or Italy. So, what has happened in the past couple of years is that the San Marinese televotes derived from using a combination of similar countries’ televote scores. With the new voting system the San Marinese will be able to cast their votes online.
