Eurovision 2020: Amsterdam drops out of host city contention

Today NOS has reported that Amsterdam will withdraw from the host city bid for Eurovision 2020. A suitable location was not available for the time period given. Potential venues such as The Ziggo Dome, the RAI and the Johan Cruijff Arena are not available during the desired period. Other halls, such as AFAS Live, would be too small.

Amsterdam has looked into whether a temporary festival location using a tent was an option, surrounded by food trucks and pavilions. This option proved too complex and, according to Mayor Halsema, and would result in too many limitations and uncertainties.

There are now five cities in the race for Eurovision host 2020:

  • Rotterdam, the big favourite
  • Utrecht
  • Den Bosch
  • Arnhem
  • Maastricht

We expect to know the choice of these by sometime next month.

Are you surprised at this? Where do you hope Eurovision 2020 will be held?  Let us know in the comments.
