Cyprus 2024: It is Silia Kapsis for Cyprus!

Singer Silia Kapsis is chosen by the country of Cyprus to be their representative in the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 in Malmö (Sweden). Together with Belgium, Cyprus is the second country to have chosen their 2024 representative.

About Silia Kapsis

Silia Kapsis is a 16-year old pop singer, but she is also an actress and a TV host from Australia, but from Greek-Cypriot descent. Silia was chosen by the Cypriot public broadcaster, RIK, to fly the flag of the country during the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest.

About the 2024 Cypriot song

Not a whole lot is known yet about the song Silia Kapsis will sing in Malmö, besides that it will be (co-) written by Greek composer, Dimitris Kontopoulos.

Controversy

The first plans of Cyprus to find their next representative sparked controversy, especially in Greece. Because Cyprus wanted the winner of the Greek TV show “Fame Story” to represent Cyprus. The show would be broadcast in Greece, which would mean that Cyprus would find their representative in another country than their own, which does not comply with the rules and regulations of the national finals in both Greece and Cyprus, and also does not fit the rules that are governed by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). The latter even revised their rules and regulations blocking Cyprus from finding their representative in Greece.

Eurovision 2023

In 2023 the isle of Cyprus was represented by Andrew Lambrou, who also originates from Australia, but is born to Greek-Cypriot parents. He was internally selected, and represented Cyprus with the song “Break a Broken Heart”, ending in 6th position (of 16) in Semi-final 2, and in 12th place (of 26) in the Grand Final.
