The ESCplus team has talked to Saška, one of the two winners of EMA Freš 2020 and one of the participants of EMA 2020, the Slovenian pre-selection for the Eurovision Song Contest 2020, with the song “Še kar lovim tvoj nasmeh” to know a little more about her candidacy and the experience that she’s currently living. How do you feel about your participation in EMA 2020?
Winning on EMA Freš came completely out of the blue and was an absolute shock to me, in a positive way of course. In fact, I have not even truly realized that I will actually be standing on the EMA stage competing for being the representative of Slovenia at Eurovision. It’s almost surreal for me, like something out of a dream.
Can you tell us about the message of your song? Does it talk about any experience of your own life?
The song is about unhappy love, a disappointed person that a partner left behind. About how that person can move on and be happy, yet still think about the person they have lost, and all that remains are a few unanswered promises and a memory. I think that everyone finds themselves in this state of mind at some point in their lives.
How did you decide to submit a song to represent Slovenia at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020?
We were just in the process of making Še kar lovim tvoj nasmeh, when we heard about Ema Freš and it seemed like a good opportunity for a first public appearance. At first, we were skeptical about it, but thanks to the persuasion of my mentors Karin Zemljič in Mate Bro, from the duet Okustični, we went for it. Now, I’m glad we did. I don’t harbor any expectations, rather I promise myself – to make the best performance I’m capable of.
Have you imagined how the staging be at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 if you win the Slovenian pre-selection?
I have not thought about it yet, because I didn’t even expect to be a contestant on EMA. Firstly, we have to focus on improving the performance for EMA and really put our efforts into that. I don’t want to ponder on Eurovision for long as I want to focus on this show. My biggest achievement would be to do my job in the best way I can manage, as I don’t have much say on everything else.
What musicians inspire you?
I am inspired by musicians that follow their dreams and their own style. They inspire trends rather than following them. By people who work with their heart and soul. With their enthusiasm and passion, they inspire others. I have never had an idol. I respect everyone that works and does their best, so in a way, everyone is my idol.

EMA 2020 will be organized by Radiotelevizija Slovenija, the Slovenian broadcasting organization best known internationally as RTVSLO. It will serve as the national pre-selection for the Eurovision Song Contest 2020. A total of twelve artists will have the chance to win and represent Slovenia in the European competition. Ten artists were internationally chosen by the broadcasting organization, while the other two were chosen among the eighteen participants of another national contest called EMA Freš 2020.
