The ESCplus team has talked to Samanta Tīna, participant of Supernova 2020, the Latvian pre-selection for the Eurovision Song Contest 2020, with the song “Still breathing” to know a little more about her candidacy and the experience that she is currently living. How do you feel about your participation in Supernova 2020?
Like always, I Love it! A lot of adrenalin and taste of competition… I think once in a year it is necessary for an artist to get on a stage like this!
Can you tell us about the message of your song? Does it talk about any experience of your own life?
This is a story about the inexorable power of a woman, drawing attention to society’s stereotypes of women. We must be ideal mothers, wives, mistresses, and successful careerists with big future career plans. Sometimes also able to be masculine to exist for ourselves, our loved ones and our dreams. At the same time, you must maintain a perfect look and be able to take care of everyone around you too. This is a big system with so many obligations that don’t give you discounts! Women have no time to stop. We keep breathing and doing. But what really matters most is that we are happy and in love with ourselves, without losing ourselves as a woman, that we find time for ourselves, not as mothers, wives, careerists, but simply as women, whatever our social status, marital status, size and public stereotypes. Because we can! And yes, I am one of those strong women as well!
How will the staging be at Supernova 2020? Can you reveal anything?
I am not gonna change a lot of the staging, just some lightening, and colour things!
How did you decide to submit a song to represent Latvia at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020?
“Still Breathing” wasn’t specially made for Supernova, I released it in November as a single.
If you finally win Supernova 2020, are you going to promote your song in the official pre-parties that take place in different European countries before Eurovision?
Definitely! For sure!
Have you heard the rest of the songs of Supernova 2020? What do you think about them?
Yes, of course! I like a lot of them! But I’m really sorry about Markus and MADARA, that they aren’t in the Grand Final!

Supernova 2020 will be organized by Latvijas Televīzija, the Latvian broadcasting organization best known internationally like LTV. This contest will represent its sixth edition since it was inaugurated in 2015. Since then, it has been used as the Latvian pre-selection for the Eurovision Song Contest. A total of twenty six candidates will be the participants of the contest, but only eight of them will be qualified for the Grand Final. This will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2020, and its winner will be the artist who will represent Latvia in Rotterdam during the broadcast of the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 next May.
