Interview Eurovision Eurovision 2020 Latvia

Miks Dukurs (Supernova 2020): “I wrote the song in the trunk of a car on my way to Germany”.

The ESCplus team has talked to Miks Dukurs, participant of Supernova 2020, the Latvian pre-selection for the Eurovision Song Contest 2020, with the song “I’m falling for you” to know a little more about his candidacy and the experience that he is currently living. You can read the full interview below.

How do you feel about your participation in Supernova 2020?

It’s good to be back! There are lots of good choices this year I think! I hope I’ll do better than last year.

Can you tell us about the message of your song? Does it talk about any experience of your own life?

Nothing changed, still writing about love! Cause I still believe that it can change the world and it’s the one thing I truly believe. It’s something I’ve experienced and there’s lots of love in my family so it’s something I understand and feel confident to sing about. This could be one of those wedding songs I think cause when we get married we swear to love each other till death set us apart and it’s kinda message of my song this year. “I’m falling for you till the end”. It’s a funny story about how I wrote it though! I was actually in the trunk of a car and on my way to Germany.  Had to buy a new car for my family. So I and my friend – experienced car seller were driving all night and we were sleeping in a bed he made in the back of his car. I could not sleep so I started to do what I always do when it’s hard to fall asleep – writing songs. Don’t like to get far away from home so I wrote about that feeling when you miss someone you love the most, someone you want to spend your life with and all the things I love about her – my wife.

How will the staging be at Supernova 2020? Can you reveal us anything?

I’ll keep it simple. If I get to the finals maybe I change some details but it’s got to stay simple as the vibe of my song. Of course, I don’t want people to fall asleep but it has to be easy listening and give people some space to think about those they love the most.

How did you decide to submit a song to represent Latvia at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020?

This year it wasn’t just me deciding about participating. I put acoustic live video day before on my Instagram that I have this song I think would be good for Supernova. I also asked if they think I should participate this year and if they say yes then I’ll do it. Most of them liked the song and were sending me private messages that I should do it so I did. I did this cause I think in the end it’s about country not only about me singing my song so I thought that we should make this decision together.

If you finally win Supernova 2020, are you going to promote your song in the official pre-parties that take place in different European countries before Eurovision?

I never had a chance to sing abroad but it’s one of my biggest dreams to do that! If I’ll have a chance I’ll go and do it! Definitely!

Have you heard the rest of the songs of Supernova 2020? What do you think about them?

This is a very strong year and there are some of my favourites from other preselections I was not participating at. I think it’s gonna be tough to choose which song deserves to represent our country this year. Anyway, I never won anything associated with music in my life so I learned to have fun even if you’re not the 1st place. Especially when I was a kid I remember my parents always told me not to be sad about losing some contest. It’s most important to have fun and since lot’s of singers on this year’s Supernova are my friends I think there’s gonna be lot’s of fun! Music is love and joy we have to share! And people will pick the one who represents our country the best! No doubts! Let’s have fun.
