Markus Riva (Supernova 2020): “The more we talk about mental problems, the better it is for society”.

The ESCplus team has talked to Markus Riva, participant of Supernova 2020, the Latvian pre-selection for the Eurovision Song Contest 2020, with the song “Impossible” to know a little more about his candidacy and the experience that he is currently living. You can read the full interview below.

How do you feel about your participation in Supernova 2020?

As always, it’s good to be back and I am very excited. And this year it is a bit different because the national selection has few changes.

Can you tell us about the message of your song? Does it talk about any experience of your own life?

My song “Impossible” is co-written with my friend Aminata. And the message of the song is very direct about my life. You can read the message in every word and of course between the lines too. This song is all about the statement. And I think it is very important to talk about such things in 2020 because we live in very tough times, everyone has their own story and struggles, but it is very important to not give up. And it is a very deep song for me, but I want to tell this story and I know that it is very important to use music as a platform to help people. The more we talk about struggles and mental problems, it will be better for society

How will the staging be at Supernova 2020? Can you reveal anything?

I will not reveal that yet. But I am working on that and I hope to surprise with my concept. I am back for the seventh time and I have to surprise even myself.

How did you decide to submit a song to represent Latvia at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020?

I had no doubts about it to be honest. I know there are lot of people who want me to fail but I know that there are so many people who wanna see me succeed. And I do it for them! But of course, the song comes first. And after I wrote the song with Aminata, I was sure that this is that song.

If you finally win Supernova 2020, are you going to promote your song in the official pre-parties that take place in different European countries before Eurovision?

Well, let’s see that after the final in Latvia. I hope to be there. First, I need to make sure that I did all my best that I can do performing “Impossible”.

Have you heard the rest of the songs of Supernova 2020? What do you think about them?

I am happy that there are so many authors and performers this year and so many new ones. I wish them all good luck!
