The ESCplus team has talked to Maia, participant of Supernova 2020, the Latvian pre-selection for the Eurovision Song Contest 2020, with the song “Make it real” to know a little more about her candidacy and the experience that she is currently living. You can read the full interview below.
How do you feel about your participation in Supernova 2020?
I’m very excited, it is such an honour to be an author of one of the songs participating in Supernova 2020. I am a newcomer to the Latvian music scene and happy to be able to show my music to a wider audience.
Can you tell us about the message of your song? Does it talk about any experience of your own life?
Yes, the song is about my own experience! As all my songs. We all hesitate and procrastinate sometimes, but some of us most of the time. This song is like the encouragement that your best friend would give you if you had already annoyed him or her with all the grandiose plans that you never carry out. We all know people who live in a test regime. They have big goals that they are passionate about, but there are always obstacles in the way that prevent them from reaching their goals. Things don’t happen fast enough or on its own, it takes too much effort and compromise, and finally how comforting sometimes is to be the victim of the circumstances. Maybe you are so brave and admit that you also get stuck in excuses? Then high five! Let’s start with small steps, but persistently. The road is not easy and the shortcuts are slippery, but it is always very beautiful if we learn to observe the process! Join in! Let’s make it real!
How will the staging be at Supernova 2020? Can you reveal anything?
I will keep it simple and clean, but interesting. Some TikTok style dancing, some lights and my kick-ass attitude, which I can’t control singing this song!
How did you decide to submit a song to represent Latvia at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020?
This was written in my year plan for 2019. I’ve spent some time getting to know myself and finding what makes my heart expand in love and it is writing and performing music. I have consciously decided to be faithful to this journey. So I have a brief plan for each year to make it easier to fix where I am and where I am going.
If you finally win Supernova 2020, are you going to promote your song in the official pre-parties that take place in different European countries before Eurovision?
I am definitely interested to promote my song to the widest possible audience and spread the encouragement to dare and learn from mistakes.
Have you heard the rest of the songs of Supernova 2020? What do you think about them?
Yes, I’ve heard all of them and I have my favourites. I think that Supernova is a great platform for new artists to show their work, but few of my favourite songs are written and performed by more experienced artists in the local scene and I wish them luck getting more exposure outside Latvia or Baltic.

Supernova 2020 will be organized by Latvijas Televīzija, the Latvian broadcasting organization best known internationally like LTV. This contest will represent its sixth edition, since it was inaugurated in 2015. Since then, it has been used as the Latvian pre-selection for the Eurovision Song Contest. A total of twenty six candidates will be the participants of the contest, but only eight of them will be qualified for the Grand Final. This will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2020, and its winner will be the artist who will represent Latvia in Rotterdam during the broadcast of the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 next May.
