The ESCplus team has talked to the members of the group called INMATE, participant of EMA 2020, the Slovenian pre-selection for the Eurovision Song Contest 2020, with the song “The salt” to know a little more about their candidacy and the experience that they are currently living. How do you feel about your participation in EMA 2020?
We are really looking forward to it, especially to meet all other competing artists and event crew members of the most famous TV music show in Slovenia. On the other hand, we are very grateful that we can represent our song “The salt” for which we believe, that it is the best song we have ever made.
Can you tell us about the message of your song? Does it talk about any experience of your own life?
“The salt” is the parable of a good man who strives to make a positive change in the world. If someone is called “salt of the earth”, it means, that he is an honest person. Anyone who strives for a positive thing, very quickly encounters resistance and obstacles that are opportunities for his progress. It talks about the lives of all individuals.
How did you decide to submit a song to represent Slovenia at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020?
The main reason is that we have a bunch of new, unrecorded and unreleased songs. Like every musician we want to share our music with as many people as possible, so we took the chance and here we are. We are also 100% sure that our song “The salt” would represent Slovenia very well at Eurovision 2020.
Have you imagined how the staging be at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 if you win the Slovenian pre-selection?
Of course, we have had this image in our mind since last year, when we participated in EMA for the first time. At that time we gained a lot of experience, so this year we are fully prepared to win and get us to the Eurovision stage.
Can you tell us about your music and your musical references?
INMATE is a 5-piece creative power engine that is not afraid to push the limits. Strong guitars, striking rhythm section and powerful vocals place the band among modern new-age metal groups. Creative and hard-working band members developed their musical identity and style, adding a modern approach to the metal genre. The group is known for its firm pose and relentless persistence on stage and elsewhere.

EMA 2020 will be organized by Radiotelevizija Slovenija, the Slovenian broadcasting organization best known internationally as RTVSLO. It will serve as the national pre-selection for the Eurovision Song Contest 2020. A total of twelve artists will have the chance to win and represent Slovenia in the European competition. Ten artists were internationally chosen by the broadcasting organization, while the other two will be chosen among the eighteen participants of another national contest called EMA Freš 2020.
