The ESCplus team has talked to the members of the group called Imset, participant of EMA 2020, the Slovenian pre-selection for the Eurovision Song Contest 2020, with the song “Femme fatale” to know a little more about their candidacy and the experience that they are currently living. How do you feel about your participation in EMA 2020?
This is our first time, and we’re really excited. Although we had no expectations, but now this is really happening! Our song »Femme Fatale« is just the right one for this and we’re gonna do our best on the performance, you can definitely expect something great. For sure. Who knows, maybe we’ll see you on Eurovision.
Can you tell us about the message of your song? Does it talk about any experience of your own life?
The song is about a Femme Fatale, meaning a Fatal woman. We all know them, right? Or at least we had an experience with them. Oh, the toxicity… So yeah, we can say this is a true story from our lives. And you can feel it in the song, with the sound and lyrics aswell. A rough translation of first part of the chorus: “So just put poison in my veins, kill me quickly, let the sky be darkened by (your) love signal”. It still gives us the chills.
How did you decide to submit a song to represent Slovenia at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020?
Since we started working on new music. Which is more and more accentuated with electronic parts and little less with guitar riffs. We got a lot of help with one of the best producers in Slovenia, Matej Pečaver, who helped us with arrangements and composition. With all that combined, it led us to work with Chris Gehringer (21 Pilots, Dua Lipa, Lana Del Rey, …) via Sterling Studio in New York, and he gave that »final touch« to the songs and we really love his work. That’s why we decided to test ourselves on EMA 2020, and willing to show our music worldwide.
Have you imagined how the staging be at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 if you win the Slovenian pre-selection?
Yeah, we already have some great, crazy ideas to make our show spectacular and unique. That is something we always give away on our concerts, not just music, but the whole show is totally on another level, and that’s exactly what we’ll do if we reach Eurovision.
What musicians inspire you when you are composing your own songs?
There are four members in our band, each one with a different kind of taste for music. From metal to pop, but let’s say we fancy artists such as 21 Pilots, Bring me the horizon, Muse, Billie Eilish, Post Malone, …
And in the last few years, we gained a lot of knowledge with the whole production and songwriting, so that’s why we dare to experiment with our music. On Friday 24.1.2020 is going to be released our first single from the new upcoming album and we’re really excited about it!

EMA 2020 will be organized by Radiotelevizija Slovenija, the Slovenian broadcasting organization best known internationally as RTVSLO. It will serve as the national pre-selection for the Eurovision Song Contest 2020. A total of twelve artists will have the chance to win and represent Slovenia in the European competition. Ten artists were internationally chosen by the broadcasting organization, while the other two will be chosen among the eighteen participants of another national contest called EMA Freš 2020.
