The ESCplus team has talked to two different members of the group called Bad Habits, specifically with Mārtiņš Balodis, the lead vocalist, and with Jānis, the guitarist. The band participates in Supernova 2020, the Latvian pre-selection for the Eurovision Song Contest 2020, with the song “Sail with you”. You can read the full interview below to learn a little more about their candidacy and the experience they are currently living.
How do you feel about your participation in Supernova 2020?
Well. We all are very excited. This is the first competition we’re taking part in, ever. It’s been a blast so far!
Can you tell us about the message of your song? Does it talk about any experience of your own life?
Mārtinš Balodis: it’s a long short story. It’s like a love song. I took inspiration from my grandfather, who is ninety years old, and his beloved wife, my grandmother, who died in 1994. “… I met an old grumpy man who told me his version…”. He is still constantly giving me lessons about how to be a better man. And I’m trying to spread these lessons through the song.
How will the staging be at Supernova 2020? Can you reveal us anything?
Well… I’m sorry, we can’t reveal details yet. The only thing I can tell is that there will be a group of handsome guys and their song. We’re trying to keep this more or less simple.
How did you decide to submit a song to represent Latvia at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020?
We thought about it last year. This year it was the song which made our decision clear.
If you finally win Supernova 2020, are you going to promote your song in the official pre-parties that take place in different European countries before Eurovision?
To be honest, we haven’t heard anything about those pre-parties, but we would be honored. As many parties as possible!
Have you heard the rest of the songs of Supernova 2020? What do you think about them?
Well, yes! We had a run-through and there is an important variety. Surely every listener will find something that speaks to him on a personal level. Each one of us has different favorites.

Supernova 2020 will be organized by Latvijas Televīzija, the Latvian broadcasting organization best known internationally like LTV. This contest will represent its sixth edition since it was inaugurated in 2015. Since then, it has been used as the Latvian pre-selection for the Eurovision Song Contest. A total of twenty six candidates will be the participants of the contest, but only eight of them will be qualified for the Grand Final. This will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2020 and its winner will be the artist who will represent Latvia in Rotterdam during the broadcast of the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 next May.
