The ESCplus team has talked to Ivars Ozoliņš, the lead vocalist of the group called Audiokvartāls, participant of Supernova 2020, the Latvian pre-selection for the Eurovision Song Contest 2020, with the song “Connection” to learn a little more about their candidacy and the experience they are currently living. So we leave the full interview below.
How do you feel about your participation in Supernova 2020?
We feel great. It’s the second year we are participating in Supernova. Last year we submitted a song in Latvian and the jury gave us really great comments, but we did not qualify for semi-finals. The main reason was that the song was in Latvian, so this time we did it in English to go further. There is a big excitement about Supernova this year; we have an extra attention from the media, radio and event agencies. More people are starting to show interest about us, which is really really good. I hope we get to the finals.
Can you tell us about the message of your song? Does it talk about any experience of your own life?
This song is about our concerns about other people, mainly those who don’t know us, and the opinions in social media world like Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook. The song also talks about how far we are willing to go to be cool and well valued in social media, even though our real lives maybe aren’t like how we show there.
How will the staging be at Supernova 2020? Can you reveal us anything?
If we get to the final, we have some interesting ideas in mind, but we don’t know if we will be able to carry them out, so I don’t want to reveal anything.
How did you decide to submit a song to represent Latvia at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020?
Supernova is a great platform for artists who want to reach bigger audiences and show themselves and their work. That is the main reason why we submitted our song and of course because it’s exciting to be a part of something that many people follow.
If you finally win Supernova 2020, are you going to promote your song in the official pre-parties that take place in different European countries before Eurovision?
We haven’t thought about that yet. But if we win, we will do our best to promote the song in whole Europe to get the best results in Eurovision.
Have you heard the rest of the songs of Supernova 2020? What do you think about them?
Yes, I heard all of them. It’s interesting, that this year there are no one favorite song or two, which you know will fight for the first place. I really like ANNNA with “Polyester”, but I don’t think she’s gonna win, but we’ll see. The “Heart Beats” of Katrīna Dimanta are really catchy as well.

A total of twenty six candidates will be the participants of the contest, but only eight of them will be qualified for the Grand Final. This will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2020 and its winner will be the artist who will represent Latvia in Rotterdam during the broadcast of the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 next May.
