Interview Eurovision Eurovision 2020 Latvia

Alekss Silvērs (Supernova 2020): “Last year I was very sad, so this year I needed revenge”.

The ESCplus team has talked to Alekss Silvērs, participant of Supernova 2020, the Latvian pre-selection for the Eurovision Song Contest 2020, with the song “Again” to know a little more about his candidacy and the experience that he is currently living. You can read the full interview below.

How do you feel about your participation in Supernova 2020?

Hi! First of all, I want to say thank you for your questions and for your interest in my song. I’m really happy to be here with you. Answering your first question, I’m thrilled and very happy to be back because last year I finished my participation at Supernova 2019 really sad and I felt that I needed revenge, and I really want it! So this year is a new opportunity to show myself again, my new song and other emotions because this song is completely different according to “Fireworks”. I’m really happy and impatient to be back with my team and to be on the Supernova stage again.

Can you tell us about the message of your song? Does it talk about any experience of your own life?

Completely. This is an experience of my own life because I had a relationship that made me feel like a clown. It was like a game where I was really loving because I felt true love inside my heart. When I sing the song I understand what I’m singing completely. When I was singing “Fireworks” I didn’t feel the emotions about the song a hundred percent. Now I really feel the song, I really feel the stage and I really feel the message. The main idea of the song is to paint my nose in red like the clown that I am because for you I’m like a clown and you are playing a game.

How will the staging be at Supernova 2020? Can you reveal us anything?

This is a nice question because we’re only thinking about the idea of the song and this is the only thing that we want to happen on the stage. So this year I’m gonna be by myself a hundred percent. There are no back vocals supporting me on the stage because the studio version of the song has not even back vocals at all, there’s only my lead vocal and that’s all. The only thing that I can tell is that the staging will be really emotional with the lights and nothing more on the stage except me. So the performance will be something really loveable, emotional and from the heart.

How did you decide to submit a song to represent Latvia at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020?

Well, until the end and almost the last day I was thinking if submit the song or not. Like I was explaining to you in your first question, I was so sad last year with “Fireworks” and I felt that I needed revenge. Suddenly, I received the opportunity to take part in the main songwriting camp in Latvia. It is called “RigaLIVE” and we made the song “Again” there with a really great team. One guy is from Estonia and we are from Latvia. The result of the composition is like a rebirth because this is a real story of my life, and that is the main reason why I submitted the song.

If you finally win Supernova 2020, are you going to promote your song in the official pre-parties that take place in different European countries before Eurovision?

I’m not thinking about the victory right now, I’m just thinking to qualify for the final and to sing the song from my heart. That’s all I want! But if I finally win of course I’d like to perform in different European countries before Eurovision to meet a lot of new people and the other contestants. But this is only if I win. For now, the main idea is to get a really nice staging, nice singing and beautiful emotions. That’s all I want!

Have you heard the rest of the songs of Supernova 2020? What do you think about them?

Yes, I’ve heard all the twenty six songs. I’ve got some favourites, but sorry I don’t want to say who they are. There are especially two songs that I really like and they sound really eurovisionable probably. I like the quality of the songs this year. I feel we have like a concurrence and I think that is really great because the true competition is to feel that there is somebody more powerful than you and it makes you work harder to beat it. I like the quality this year, I like the songs, and I like the people who are participating because they don’t give up and give the best of them again, and again, and again.
