ESC+Plus has talked to Licia Chery, one of the participants to compete at Swiss national final for Eurovision 2015. She will sing “Fly” on January 31.
ESC+Plus: Hello Licia! Congratulations on having been selected to the Swiss national final for Eurovision 2015.
Thank you very much
E+: Firstly, we would like to know about you. Can you tell us about you, your musical evolution and important achievements?
First, let me thank you for taking the time to interview me 🙂
Well, it all started with piano lessons when I was 8. Gradually I started writing songs. When I was 17 I composed my first album and recorded it as a work for school. When I was 21, I left Switzerland to try to make it in the USA. I performed in New-York then in Canada, and I won a casting in Brooklyn and was able to sing my own songs in Brooklyn for the first time. At 24, I raised money on a website to produce my debut album and for the First time, my songs were on the radio 🙂
Now, at 29, I recorded my next album in Canada and it’s scheduled for Spring 2015. In the meanwhile, I’m trying to represent Switzerland at the Eurosong Contest! 🙂
E+: Nowadays, the musical industry is experiencing some difficulties. How are you living this situation in Switzerland?
Being an artist has never been easy no matter the time and place. When you’re passionate you just do your best to live for what you love. And I really love what I do!
E+: Why did you decide to enter this year’s Swiss national selection?
Because the Swiss national radio/television asked me to be part of it so I gave it a try… 🙂 And I have to say that it was also one of my dream when I was a little girl, to win Eurovision for Switzerland, just like Celine Dion did.
E+: What would mean for you to represent Switzerland at Eurovision?
To me it’s very important because Swiss artists are underrepresented in the world of music industry. It’s like telling everybody to come and listen to what’s going on in Switzerland musically. To me, it’s like opening a door.
E+: You will sing “Fly” at the Swiss final. Can you tell us about your song and the story behind the lyrics?
This song is about trying to flee your troubles for a while. To me, it’s important to know that life is not a fairy tale but no matter your problems you always have to take a moment to forget them and think about something that can make you smile.
My song is trying to do that. Making you smile. For a while.
E+: How was the composition procedure of the song?
It was very hard. I was working with my guitarist Pierre Fouqueray and we couldn’t find a nice hook! We had the verse but not the hook and we were just about to give up when this idea came…
E+: Can you give us any hint about your final stage performance?
Here is my clue: Silver and gold can never be cold!
E+: What are your main strengths so as to get the people’s support to reach Eurovision?
My sincerity, my energy, the fact that the song is here to make everybody happy…
E+: Imagine you win national final, would you sing in English or in any other language you speak at Eurovision?
I really don’t give much importance to the language of the song. To me what matters is the music, the meaning and the soul. If I feel like singing in French, I do, if it’s Creole, I do…
Right now, I feel like singing in English.
E+: Would you make a new version of the song?
Maybe… only time will tell 🙂
E+: What can Eurovision contribute to your musical career?
Well, it’s a wonderful opportunity to be seen so I really hope that people will want to discover what I do 🙂
E+: Do you have any favorite song among the other Swiss finalist?
All the songs are great and it’s really an honor to compete.
E+: Do you usually watch Eurovision? Do you have any favorite song in the hostiry of the contest?
Right now I’m just concentrating on doing my best to give the best performance on the 31st of January. But As soon as I get my ticket to Vienna, I will check :)!
E+: In a few days you are going to publish your second album two years after “Blue Your Mind” (2012). What type of songs will be included in this album? Where would you like to promote it?
It is going to be a mix of Soul and Rock and Pop. I would love to promote it all around the world hahaha.
E+: Finally, would you like to send a message for our readers?
All I have to say is: JUST TRY TO FLYYYYYYYYYYYYYY WITH ME 😉
