Public broadcaster Macedonian Radio Television (MRT) has included the Junior Eurovision Song Contest in its draft Annual Work Programme for 2027, which is currently under public consultation. The document points to North Macedonia continuing at the children’s contest in 2027, the same year the Balkan country returns to the Eurovision Song Contest.
As far as the children’s contest is concerned, the plan states that Junior Eurovision will be part of the programming of MRT 5, the public broadcaster’s children’s channel. Specifically, MRT describes the contest as one of its key international projects linked to its content for young audiences.
Despite the relevance of the document, these references are not an official confirmation, which is usually announced around the middle of the year.
For now, the 2027 programming forecast is an annual proposal going through public consultation and is still awaiting approval. The inclusion of Junior Eurovision therefore shows that MRT is considering taking part in Junior Eurovision 2027, but the corresponding internal procedures still have to be completed before its participation can be considered officially confirmed.
In 2026, Ana Stojanoska will represent North Macedonia with “Idnata Jas” on Saturday 24 October in Ta’ Qali (Malta). The young singer was selected by MRT following an open call, and the song was composed by Nikola Micevski, with lyrics by Ilcho Nechovski.
MRT’s plan covers every step of a possible North Macedonian entry at Junior Eurovision 2027
The references to the Junior Eurovision Song Contest go beyond a simple mention. The programming plan includes a range of activities related to a possible North Macedonian participation in 2027.
According to the document, the project includes the selection and preparation of the representative, the production and promotion of the song, the making of the official music video, the development of the stage and visual concept, the creation of television and digital content, and coordination with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).
MRT also notes that the project would give international visibility to young artists and to Macedonian music, while helping to develop new practices in production, creativity and promotion within the public broadcaster itself.
The proposal also places the Junior Eurovision Song Contest within a broader strategy to strengthen content for children and young people. Among MRT’s general priorities for 2027 are the development of children’s programming, the creation of content for families and reaching new generations through digital and multiplatform formats.
A possible continuation at Junior Eurovision would come in an especially significant year for the North Macedonian public broadcaster. In 2027, North Macedonia will also return to the Eurovision Song Contest, to be held in Bulgaria, after four contests away. It could therefore become a year of international prominence for MRT, with a presence at both the Eurovision Song Contest and its junior version.
In December 2025, MRT’s Programme Council backed the broadcaster’s talks with the EBU about the possibility of hosting Junior Eurovision 2027, which would be the first time the country has hosted a Eurovision event. North Macedonia was even mentioned as a possible host for 2026, although the EBU ultimately chose Malta. Since then, no details have emerged about any further talks between the organisation and MRT.
