Liis Lemsalu: “My song has a lot of good emotions powered with a lot of strength” (Estonian semifinalist – Interview)

ESC+Plus has talked to Liis Lemsalu, semifinalist of this year’s Estonian national selection for Eurovision. The singer will perform “Keep Running” in the second semi-final of Eesti Laul 2017 to take place on the 18th of February.

ESC+Plus: Hello! First of all, thank you so much for your time and congratulations on having been selected to take part in the Estonian national selection for Eurovision 2017!

Can you tell us about you, your musical career and important achievements?

Liis Lemsalu: I participated in the Estonian Idol in 2011 and also won the competition. It was then when i really started to get into singing and expressing myself through music. This year I also had the amazing opportunity to be the warm-up singer for the one and only Joss Stone. I have done quite a lot if things in Estonia and i am super grateful for that.

ESC+Plus: What impelled you to take part in “Eesti Laul 2017”?

Liis Lemsalu: I guess that i just felt like I had the right song at the right time. The team that I am working with is also totally different and I am really excited to see how it will go 🙂

ESC+Plus: How did you feel when you knew you had qualified for the semi-final? Did you expect it?

Liis Lemsalu: I was really really happy! It is so good and so much fun to take part of Eesti Laul 2017

ESC+Plus: What would it mean to you to represent Estonia?

Liis Lemsalu: Because I am a cowriter of the song and the lyrics are also written by me, it would definitely be something really personal and special for me. To represent Estonia with my own song, now that would be something magical.

ESC+Plus: How do you remember your previous participation in Eesti Laul?

Liis Lemsalu: It has always been really fun and spontaneous. Eesti Laul is a great show that Estonians love to watch and it is always so much fun!

ESC+Plus: Can you tell us about your song? What is the story behind the lyrics?

The song is talking about an individual who has got their backpack always ready for a certain person. I guess it is a song about being there for your lover, friend, mom ,dad, whatever or whoever comes to mind. It is about a person who you would always go out on different adventures with, a specific person you want to share different moments and memories with.

ESC+Plus: Why do you think your song has to be selected for Kiev? What are you strengths to reach the top in the competition?

Liis Lemsalu: I personally think it is a really good song that suites really well into the competition. It has a lot of good emotions and is powered with a lot of strength. I guess people will just have to have a listen and let the music talk 🙂

ESC+Plus: Have you thought about your performance for Eesti Laul’s semifinal?

Liis Lemsalu: Yes, but that is still a secret 🙂

ESC+Plus: Do you usually watch Eurovision? What are your favorite songs in the history of the competition?

Liis Lemsalu: I watch Eurovision every year and I think that it has a really positive vibe to it. I really liked the song Denmark had with the Olsen Brothers, Sweden is also really really owning it every year. It is hard to pick a favourite.

ESC+Plus: If you could choose a Eurovision former participant to sing along with, who would it be?

Liis Lemsalu: Loreen seems so down to earth and mystical, would be great to hang out with her and then share a stage with 🙂

ESC+Plus: Finally, can you send a message for our readers and Eurovision fans?

Liis Lemsalu: Sending you much much love! I hope you are having an amazing time in your life, wishing you all the best!
