RTVE will announce full details of its participation in Junior Eurovision 2022 on the 19th of July in Benidorm

The 20th edition of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest is just under six months away. The event will take place on Sunday 11 December in the Armenian capital Yerevan, following the victory in Paris of Malena and her acclaimed “Qami Qami”. All European public broadcasters belonging to the European Broadcasting Union will have to confirm their presence at the Eurofestival, either by a regular deadline at the end of July or by an extraordinary deadline of up to a month later.

Many of the participants are already launching their national competitions and selections, such as the Dutch Junior Songfestival or the classic Polish or Maltese pre-selections. However, many others have opted to choose their representatives internally for the Yerevan event, as is the case of France, which has been achieving very good results in this way for the last four years.

As ESCplus has known from sources close to the public corporation, RTVE will reveal all the details about its selection process for Junior Eurovision 2022 on 19 July in Benidorm, taking advantage of the big call for the media in the Alicante city in which all the ins and outs of the 2023 edition of the Benidorm Fest will be detailed. Internal election or open election with public decision? 19-J is the date marked on the calendar by all fans of the event in Spain

RTVE seeks “a great proposal” to promote Junior Eurovision in Spain

Eva Mora, head of the Eurovision delegation, and Irene Mahia took part several weeks ago in the EuroVermúthe RTVE digital programme on Twitch about Eurovision presented by Daniel Borrego and Verónica Casanova.

Eva Mora said that her team is already preparing Junior Eurovision and Benidorm Fest 2023. Mora has given some hints of what will be Spain’s eighth participation in Junior Eurovision. Our head of delegation confirms that they are already outlining ideas for this 2022 edition and will soon start to materialise them. They want to find a good proposal to maintain Spain’s great track record in the contest. As soon as everything is “well tied up”, they will communicate more details.

“We want to bring a good proposal to be in a good position”

Eva Mora

RTVE is very satisfied with Spain’s role in the festival since its return in 2019. They understand that the good results are the fruit of how the public broadcaster has taken the children’s competition very seriously. For this reason, they want to continue working along these lines in order to continue at this level.

“We have always done well, apart from last year when we had a bad result”

Spain at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest

Spain participated in Junior Eurovision for the first time in 2003, being one of the 16 countries that opened the festival in Copenhagen (Denmark). In this first edition, Sergio with his song Desde El Cielo placed 2nd with 125 points. The following year, in Lillehammer (Norway), with 171 points, María Isabel with her song Antes Muerta Que Sencilla won the only Spanish victory so far

A new 2nd place in 2005 and a 4th place in 2006 closed a successful first stage for Spain at Junior Eurovision. In these first four consecutive editions, the contest gained great popularity among the Spanish public, thanks to a large extent to the pre-selections with which RTVE chose its representatives, such as EuroJunior. They were also the starting point for the musical careers of many of the singers who are now present in the Spanish music market, such as Blas Cantó (who represented Spain in 2021), Dani Fernández and Antonio José

Despite the festival’s resounding success, the public corporation decided to withdraw from the competition in 2007, claiming that it “promoted stereotypes that were not shared”. During these years of absence, public interest in Junior Eurovision continued and the EBU tried, albeit unsuccessfully, to bring Spain back to the contest. Finally, on 25 June 2019, RTVE announced its long-awaited return after 13 years of absence. In this second stage, the public broadcaster opted for internal elections and managed to maintain the good level of previous years. Both Melani y su canción Mars in 2019 and Soleá y su Palante in 2021 achieved a great 3rd place.

In the last edition of 2021 held in Paris (France), Levi Díaz with Laugh reached 15th place with 77 points

Spain is one of the countries with the best track record at Junior Eurovision, placing in the top three in five of its seven participations

Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2022

The Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2022 will take place next Sunday 11 December in Yerevan, the capital of Armenia. Following the victory of Maléna and her Qami Qami at the last festival in Paris (France), the Karen Demirchyan Complex will host the contest for the second time in its history, as it did in 2011

However, this edition is special as it marks the 20th anniversary of the children’s festival. To celebrate, public broadcaster ARMTV is preparing a big show where it hopes to have as many participating countries as possible fighting for the crystal microphone
