Interview Eurovision Eurovision 2015 Iceland

Erna Hrönn: “If I win I will definitely sing in English” (Icelandic participant – Interview)

ESC+Plus has talked with Erna Hrön, one of the lucky selected to compete at the Icelandic “Söngvakeppni Sjónvarpsins” 2015.

Check what she has told us below!

ESC+Plus: Hello Erna! First of all, congratulations on having been selected to compete at the Icelandic selection for Eurovision 2015!

Thank you so much, I´m so excited!

E+: You have already taken part at Söngvakeppni Sjónvarpsins before, why did you decide entering the competition once more time?

Well I´ve participated almost every year since 2006, either as a backing vocalist or in the front but this year it´s a little different because it´s the first time I wrote the lyrics I´m singing so I really wanted to sing it myself.

E+: What it would mean for you to represent Iceland in Vienna?

It would mean a lot to me to represent Iceland in Vienna. For me it would be a dream come true and my kids would be so proud. One of the greatest things about Eurovision is the new people you meet and the friendships you make so for me it would mean a lot to meet again my friends from all around Europe.

E+: Can you tell us about your musical career and important achievements?

When I was just three years old I announced to my parents that I was going to be a singer and an actress so my fate was decided early. I started to learn classical singing by the age of nine and continued studying it for ten years. At that point I knew that I didn´t want to be a classical opera singer and then it was no turning back. I was a front singer in a band called “Bermuda” for four years and we released one album in 2007. I´ve been working as a backing vocalist for many years and have sung with so many Icelandic artists both at the studio and on concerts. I have participated in many big tribute shows in Iceland, both as a backing vocalist and as a front; Madonna, Michael Jackson, Tom Jones, Meat Loaf and U2 and that´s what I really love about my job…all these different roles I play. I released my first solo album before Christmas 2013, a Christmas album, and it´s just a matter of time when my number two will be released.

E+: You were Eurovision backing vocalist of Yohanna and Hera Björk back in 2009 and 2010 respectively. How did you experience both contests?

That experience was almost indescribable and gave me some of my best memories ever. I had this image in my head about Eurovision but it was not half as amazing as it really was. Afterwards I respect and love the competition even more than I did before.

E+: Your song is called “Myrkrið hljótt”. Can you tell us about it? What is the story behind the lyrics?

It´s a rather “blue” song about a heartbreak and how the darkness helps the heart to heal when it feels almost impossible.

E+: If you win “Söngvakeppni Sjónvarpsins 2015”, would sing in English or Icelandic at Eurovision? Would you make a new version of the song?

If I win I will definitely sing in English. We are very happy about the version of the song as it is now but who knows what happens along the way.

E+: How are you preparing your “Söngvakeppni Sjónvarpsins” performance? Can you reveal us anything about it?

These days we´re focusing on stage-work and outfits. Not much I can reveal at this moment but I can tell you that you´re in for a powerful performance =).

E+: What are your main strengths so as to get the support of juries and televote to reach Eurovision?

I don´t know, I´m just focusing on being myself and singing my heart out.

E+: Do you usually watch Eurovision? What are your favourite song in the history of the competition?

I am a huge Eurovision fan and I usually throw a big party at my house to watch the finals. It´s almost impossible to choose a one song out of so many brilliant songs that have participated in the competition but I think I have to say Euphoria by Loreen from Sweden that won in 2012.

E+: Finally, would you like to send a message for our readers?

My dear Eurovision friends! It´s time to sit back and enjoy the show and hopefully we´ll met in Vienna in May =).
